Manoel Carlos Gonçalves de Almeida (14 March 1933 – 10 January 2026), popularly known as Maneco, was a Brazilian screenwriter, director, producer and actor.[1][2][3][4] He was the father of actress Júlia Almeida.[5]

From the 1990 decade on, his telenovelas became known for portraiting the lives of the upper middle-class Rio de Janeiro society, especially in the Leblon neighborhood. Another of his marks is that several of his works have a different protagonist named '"Helena"; Carlos said he drew inspiration on Helen of Troy, finding the name more appropriate to a character than to a real-life person.[6]

Carlos died in Rio de Janeiro on 10 January 2026, at the age of 92.[7]
