List of Buryats

This is a list of notable ethnic Buryats, sorted by field and last name regardless of citizenship / nationality.

Buryat ethnicity is associated with one's father's ethnicity alone. In case mother is of another ethnicity it is not specifically expressed.

Scientists, engineers and scholars

Mathematics and physics

• Nikolai Ivanov (1910–1976) — theoretical physicist, professor and head of the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Buryat State Pedagogical Institute. He also taught physics at the National University of Mongolia.
• Chimit Tsydypov (1925–1989) — radiophysicist and professor who headed the physics laboratory of the Buryat branch of the Siberian Division of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and contributed to the development of academic physics in Buryatia.
• Damba Sanditov (1941–2021) — physicist specialising in the molecular physics and thermodynamics of glass, polymers and other non-crystalline solids; founder of a research school in the physics of disordered materials.
• Dashadondok Shirapov — mathematician and mathematical physicist whose research includes nonlinear dynamical systems, physical modelling and electromagnetic processes.

Electrical engineering, radio and aerospace technology

• Martyn Abakhaev (1906–1982) — electrochemist and engineer who developed iron–nickel batteries and other chemical power sources used in industrial and specialised equipment. He received the Stalin Prize and the USSR State Prize.
• Platon Matkhanov (1914–1991) — electrical engineer, professor and head of the Department of Theoretical Foundations of Electrical Engineering at the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute from 1959 to 1984. He developed power sources for high-power radar stations and wrote textbooks on linear and nonlinear electrical circuits.
• Abo Sharakshane (1921–2005) — radio engineer, electronics specialist and designer of early-warning and anti-ballistic-missile systems; doctor of technical sciences, major general and recipient of the USSR State Prize.
• Zhalsaray Molonov — mechanical and electrical engineer who researched discrete feed drives for machine tools and served as the first dean of the Electrical Engineering Faculty of the East Siberian Institute of Technology after its establishment in 1970.
• Yefim Khaidurov (1925–2012) — engineer and designer of internationally successful target pistols and sporting revolvers, including the TOZ-35 series.

Chemistry, electrochemistry and materials science

• Dmitry Mognonov — polymer chemist, doctor of chemical sciences and professor; known for the synthesis and study of heat-resistant polyheteroarylenes, polybenzimidazoles and other high-performance polymers.
• Kuzma Nikiforov (1938–2010) — chemical engineer and mineral-processing scientist who founded a research laboratory for the chemistry and technology of mineral raw materials and later directed the Buryat Institute of Natural Sciences. He received the State Prize of the Russian Federation for mineral-processing technology.
• Boris Tanganov (1940–2021) — analytical and physical chemist whose work concerned electrolyte solutions, chemical equilibria and physicochemical methods of analysis.
• Galina Nikolaeva (born 1948) — pharmaceutical chemist who studied medicinal plants of Siberia and developed methods for extracting biologically active compounds and producing plant-based medicines.
• Larisa Radnaeva — natural-products chemist whose work includes biologically active compounds, medicinal plants and pharmaceutical chemistry.
• Lyubov Bokhoeva — mechanical engineer and materials scientist specialising in structural strength, composite materials and the testing of aviation and mechanical-engineering components.

Biology, medicine and agricultural sciences

• Bair Namsaraev (1943–2015) — microbiologist and biogeochemist who studied microbial communities in Lake Baikal, saline lakes, hydrothermal systems, groundwater and marine sediments; founder of a school of microbial ecology in Buryatia.
• Bimba-Tsyren Namzalov (born 1948) — botanist, geobotanist and ecologist specialising in steppe vegetation and the arid ecosystems of southern Siberia and Central Asia.
• Sergei Nikolaev (born 1944) — pharmacologist who researched natural medicines, phytotherapy and the pharmacological basis of Tibetan medicine. He founded the medical faculty of Buryat State University and served as its first dean.
• Konstantin Munkoev (1919–2001) — animal scientist who developed breeding and production systems for beef cattle, yaks and livestock adapted to mountain and steppe environments.
• Semen Biltuev (born 1938) — animal scientist, professor and specialist in livestock breeding and fine-wool sheep production.
• Anatoly Muruev (born 1948) — veterinary scientist who researched animal reproduction, veterinary obstetrics and the development and application of veterinary medicines.
• Mikhail Danilov (born 1954) — food technologist and biotechnologist who researched dairy, meat and probiotic-food technologies and headed a university department of meat and preserved-food technology.
• Fyodor Madagaev (1948–2020) — food scientist who founded a research school studying electrical stimulation and other physical methods in meat-processing technology.

Earth and environmental sciences

• Arnold Tulokhonov (born 1949) — geographer and environmental scientist specialising in geomorphology, water resources, regional development and natural-resource management; full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
• Endon Garmaev (born 1965) — geographer and hydrologist specialising in water resources and the hydrological systems of the Baikal region; director of the Baikal Institute of Nature Management and full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
• Anatoly Lekhatinov (1935–2021) — engineering geologist and geocryologist who helped develop methods for studying and forecasting exogenous geological processes and led major research associated with the Baikal–Amur Mainline. He received the State Prize of the Russian Federation.
• Dmitry Ontoev (1916–1995) — geologist and mineralogist, doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences.
• Matvei Melkheev (1906–1982) — physical geographer and toponymist, professor at Irkutsk State University and author of works on the physical geography, hydrology and place names of the Baikal region.

Humanities and social sciences

• Dorzhi Banzarov (c. 1822–1855) — orientalist, linguist and scholar of Mongolian religion, generally regarded as the first Buryat academic.
• Gombojab Tsybikov (1873–1930) — geographer, orientalist and explorer known for his journey to Tibet and some of the earliest published photographs of Lhasa.
• Mikhail Bogdanov (1878–1919) — historian and political thinker who studied Buryat history, society and land relations.

Writers, poets, playwrights and folklorists

Early modern Buryat literature

• Bazar Baradin (1878–1937) — orientalist, writer and playwright whose dramas and prose were among the earliest works of modern written Buryat literature; he also participated in the establishment of Buryat-language theatre and education.
• Bavasan Abiduev (1909–1940) — poet and one of the founders of Buryat children's literature; known for literary adaptations of Buryat folk tales.
• Tsyden Don (1905–1938) — poet, prose writer and literary critic; one of the founders of Buryat Soviet literature.
• Tsyren-Dulma Dondokova (1911–2001) — poet, prose writer and playwright, regarded as the first major Buryat woman poet.
• Khotsa Namsaraev (1889–1959) — poet, novelist and playwright, widely regarded as one of the founders of modern Buryat literature; he also produced literary versions of Buryat epic works.
• Zhamso Tumunov (1916–1955) — poet, novelist, playwright and journalist; author of The Steppe Awoke, generally recognised as the first Buryat novel.

Novelists and prose writers

• Afrikan Balburov (1919–2009) — novelist, essayist and journalist; People's Writer of Buryatia and author of works about social and historical change in Siberia.
• Dashi-Rabdan Batozhabai (1921–1977) — novelist, poet and playwright, particularly noted for historical fiction and for the novel trilogy The Stolen Happiness.
• Mikhail Zhigzhitov (1915–1990) — novelist known for fiction about hunters, taiga communities and the Lake Baikal region, including the historical trilogy Podlemorye.
• Baradiy Mungonov (1922–1989) — novelist and journalist whose prose portrayed rural Buryat society and the transformations of the Soviet period.
• Chimit Tsydendambaev (1918–1977) — poet and novelist who made a major contribution to the development of Buryat historical prose and long-form poetry.
• Tsyden-Zhap Zhimbiyev (1928–2006) — novelist, poet and journalist; People's Writer of Buryatia and recipient of the Nikolai Ostrovsky literary prize.
• Vladimir Mitypov (born 1939) — novelist known for historical fiction, philosophical prose and science fiction.
• Byambyn Rinchen (1905–1977) — Mongolian novelist, poet, essayist and translator of Buryat descent; also a prominent linguist and historian.
• Sengiin Erdene (1929–2000) — Mongolian novelist and short-story writer of Buryat descent, known for psychological and lyrical prose.

Playwrights and screenwriters

• Alexander Vampilov (1937–1972) — Soviet playwright and prose writer of partial Buryat ancestry; author of The Elder Son, Duck Hunting, Last Summer in Chulim and other widely performed plays.
• Tsyren Shagzhin (1919–1994) — playwright, prose writer, actor and theatre director whose works contributed to the development of professional Buryat drama.

• Nikolay Damdinov (1932–1999) — poet, translator and People's Poet of Buryatia; recipient of the Maxim Gorky State Prize of the Russian SFSR.
• Gennady Dagurov (1909–1999) — poet, philologist and scholar of Buryat language and oral tradition.
• Dashi Dambaev (1938–1975) — lyric poet whose verses were frequently adapted as songs.
• Bair Dugarov (born 1947) — poet, literary scholar and People's Poet of Buryatia; his work combines Buryat-Mongol history, mythology and contemporary lyric poetry.
• Damba Zhalsarayev (1925–2002) — poet and People's Poet of Buryatia; author of the lyrics of the Anthem of the Republic of Buryatia.

• Matvei Khangalov (1858–1918) — ethnographer, folklorist and educator who collected and published Buryat tales, songs, beliefs, ritual texts and oral epics; one of the principal early documenters of Buryat oral literature.
• Yegor Sorokovikov-Magai (1868–1948) — traditional storyteller and epic performer who preserved and transmitted Buryat tales and heroic oral poetry.
• Tsyben Zhamtsarano (1881–1942) — folklorist, linguist and literary scholar who collected Buryat and Mongolian oral literature and helped establish modern scholarly and publishing institutions in Mongolia and Buryatia.
• Alexander Soktoev (1931–1998) — literary scholar and folklorist, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and founder of the Siberian school of folklore studies; initiated the multilingual series Monuments of Folklore of the Peoples of Siberia and the Far East.
