Jameda is a German website for finding healthcare professionals, reading patient reviews and booking appointments.[1] The company is based in Munich and has been part of Docplanner since 2022.[2]

Jameda began operating in 2007. Burda Digital acquired the company in 2015 and sold it to Docplanner, with the takeover completed in 2022.[3][2]

History

[edit]

Jameda was founded in 2007 as a doctor-rating website and later added online appointment booking.[4][1] In November 2015, Tomorrow Focus agreed to sell Jameda to Burda Digital for €46.8 million. Jameda employed around 40 people at the time.[3]

In January 2017, Jameda acquired Patientus, a provider of software for medical video consultations. The acquisition added video consultations to Jameda's existing services.[5]

In November 2021, Hubert Burda Media agreed to sell Jameda to Docplanner, a healthcare technology company founded in Poland. The deal brought Docplanner into the German market.[4][6] Docplanner said it planned to invest more than €250 million in Germany and hire additional headcount for Jameda.[4]

Services

[edit]

Jameda lists doctors and other healthcare professionals in a searchable directory. Users can search for providers, read and submit reviews and, where available, book appointments or video consultations.[1]

Doctors and practices can also get additional paid features on Jameda. These have included enhanced profiles and tools for online appointment booking.[7]

Reception

[edit]

A study published in 2023 examined 25,549 Jameda profiles. It found statistically significant differences between paid and non-paying profiles: doctors with paid memberships had, on average, more reviews, higher ratings, more recommendations and more profile views. The authors stated that the study could not determine the mechanisms responsible for these differences.[7]

[edit]

Several disputes involving Jameda have reached Germany's Federal Court of Justice.

In 2014, the court ruled that a physician could not require Jameda to remove a basic profile containing publicly available information. The court weighed the doctor's privacy rights against Jameda's interests and the public's access to information.[8]

In 2016, the court dealt with a doctor's challenge to an anonymous review. The court ruled that Jameda had to investigate sufficiently specific complaints and seek evidence that the reviewer had actually been a patient.[9]

A further ruling in February 2018 focused on differences between Jameda's paid and non-paid profiles. The court ordered Jameda to remove the profile of a dermatologist after finding that its presentation of paying physicians on the profiles of non-paying physicians meant that the platform had left the position of a neutral information intermediary.[10] Jameda then changed the way profiles and advertising were displayed.[11]
