Fashion Designer: Style Icon, released in North America as My Fashion Studio, is a 2007 simulation video game developed by French studio Creative Patterns for the Nintendo DS. It was published by 505 Games in Europe on 9 November 2007 and by Ubisoft in North America on 10 June 2008. The game follows an aspiring fashion designer and simulates the design and construction of clothing.
Gameplay
[edit]The player controls a young woman pursuing a career as a fashion designer. The career begins at a fashion training school and later allows the player to establish a workshop, take private design contracts, supply boutiques and operate mail-order businesses.[1]
Gameplay is structured around missions in which the player designs and makes clothing for clients. Using the Nintendo DS stylus, the player selects patterns and fabrics and performs stages of dressmaking including cutting, sewing, ironing and attaching buttons.[citation needed] Completed designs can be presented in catalogues, on movie posters and in fashion shows, for which the player chooses models and hairstyles.[1] Performance is evaluated according to tailoring time, design choices and accuracy, with patterns, fabrics, accessories and models unlocked as the player progresses.[1]
In addition to the career mode, a free mode allows clothing to be designed without completing missions. The game also supports wireless multiplayer competitions in which players create designs against one another.[1]
Development and release
[edit]Fashion Designer: Style Icon was announced by 505 Games in June 2007. It was developed by Creative Patterns, a studio based in Strasbourg, France.[1] At the time, Pocket Gamer noted that its announcement followed that of Ubisoft's similarly themed Imagine: Fashion Designer, with both games scheduled for release in Europe later that year.[2]
The game was released in Europe as Fashion Designer: Style Icon on 9 November 2007.[citation needed] Ubisoft subsequently published it in North America under the title My Fashion Studio on 10 June 2008.[3]
Reception
[edit]IGN gave the North American release, titled My Fashion Studio, a score of 7 out of 10.[5] NexGam gave Fashion Designer: Style Icon a score of 7 out of 10. The reviewer compared its structure to Cooking Mama, praising the straightforward stylus-based gameplay, setting and humorous story, while noting the limited variety of dressmaking tasks and repetitive voice samples.[6]
GamePro was more critical, describing the dressmaking activities as overly simple and repetitive and also criticising the repeated voice samples. In a 2008 feature assessing casual games, it gave the game a "game content" rating of 6 per cent.[4]
