Zev Levin (born 17 December 1940) is an Israeli-American atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on cloud and precipitation physics, atmospheric electricity, aerosols, and climate processes. He held senior academic positions at Tel Aviv University and served as principal investigator of the Mediterranean Israeli Dust Experiment (MEIDEX), conducted aboard Space Shuttle Columbia. After retiring from Tel Aviv University, he served as a professor at the Cyprus Institute in Nicosia, Cyprus, where he coordinated interdisciplinary studies on climate change and rainfall variability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Early life and education
[edit]Levin received a B.Sc. in Physics from California State University, Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington.[1] He conducted postdoctoral research at UCLA from 1970–1971.[2]
Academic career
[edit]Levin joined Tel Aviv University in 1971, serving in positions including Head of the Department of Geophysics (1985–1987), Dean for Research / Vice President of Research (1987–1992), and Chair of the School of Environmental Studies (from 2000).[1]
He held visiting research appointments at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, NASA Ames Research Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, and Stanford University.
After retirement from Tel Aviv University, Levin joined the Cyprus Institute in Nicosia, Cyprus, where he served as a professor for nine years. He coordinated the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC) metastudy on climate change and rainfall in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East.[3]
Research
[edit]Levin's research includes cloud microphysics, atmospheric aerosols, cloud and precipitation physics, ice nucleation, atmospheric electricity and lightning (including on other planets), weather modification, and the effects of aerosols on climate change. Levin served as a principal investigator of the Mediterranean Israeli Dust Experiment (MEIDEX), a space-based study of desert dust and cloud interactions conducted aboard Space Shuttle Columbia during mission STS-107.[4] Levin has advised the World Meteorological Organization and national governments on cloud seeding and other methods of rainfall enhancement.[3]
