Vipin Kumar Sharma (commonly known as Dr. Vipin Sharma or Vipin Sir) is an Indian educator, author, and edtech executive. He serves as the Director of Growth at the educational technology firm Physics Wallah (PW) and is widely recognized for his instructional work in biology for candidates preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG).[1]
Sharma first gained widespread recognition through his YouTube educational platform, Ozone Classes, where he delivered open-access video tutorials on botany and zoology aligned with the national secondary school curriculum.[2] In 2021, he was named among the top 50 finalists worldwide for the inaugural Global Student Prize, established by Chegg.org in partnership with the Varkey Foundation.[3] He has since been active in curriculum development, corporate edtech growth, and youth health awareness initiatives.
Early life and education
[edit]Sharma was born and raised in northern India in a family of modest financial means.[2] Although he secured a qualifying rank for admission to a prominent distant medical college, he opted to matriculate at a local university to remain near his home and provide care for his ailing mother.[2]
He completed his undergraduate studies at Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak, Haryana, earning a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Biological Sciences. He graduated top of his class and was subsequently awarded a university gold medal by the Education Minister of Haryana for his academic performance.[1]
Sharma continued his postgraduate education at the Central University of Haryana, earning a Master of Science (MSc) in Biochemistry.[2] He subsequently commenced doctoral research (Ph.D.) in biochemistry, focusing on cellular mechanisms and cancer biology.[1] In addition to his primary background in the natural sciences, Sharma has pursued studies across interdisciplinary fields, including business administration and educational psychology.[1] In March 2021, he received an honorary Doctor of Education degree conferred by California Public University.[2]
Career
[edit]Early teaching and digital pedagogy
[edit]Sharma began his teaching career through voluntary community tutoring. During university vacations and weekends, he conducted complimentary instructional sessions for children residing in urban slums and visited closed government schools to support students requiring additional academic instruction.[1][2] These experiences led him to seek scalable ways to provide quality science education to students with limited access to commercial coaching institutes.[2]
To reach a wider student body, Sharma established the YouTube educational channel Ozone Classes, focusing on foundational biology instruction.[2] His teaching focused on systematic, line-by-line analyses of the NCERT textbooks, which constitute the core syllabus for medical entrance examinations in India. By utilizing visual mnemonics, structured diagrams, and topic-wise practice sets, his channel grew to hundreds of thousands of subscribers and became a prominent digital resource for NEET-UG biology preparation.[1]
Physics Wallah and executive role
[edit]Following the growth of his digital lectures, Sharma joined Physics Wallah, one of India's largest educational technology companies.[1] As a senior biology instructor, he designed and delivered comprehensive course modules for key competitive entrance batches, including the platform's flagship Yakeen (dropper/repeater) and Ummeed (revision crash course) programs.[4]
Sharma later took on corporate responsibilities at the company, serving as Director of Growth at Physics Wallah.[1] In this capacity, he has overseen business development, academic program expansion, and the scaling of low-cost educational access tailored for students from Tier-2, Tier-3, and rural regions across India.[1]
Entrepreneurship and social outreach
[edit]Beyond his instructional roles, Sharma has been involved in several educational technology initiatives. He co-founded MarksUpp, a mobile application designed for peer-to-peer student doubt resolution and entrance examination study materials, which registered over 80,000 downloads.[2] He also contributed to the student community platform Brilix.[2]
In social outreach, Sharma has conducted youth community seminars focusing on substance abuse prevention, personal health literacy, and initiatives promoting educational retention and literacy for girls from marginalized communities.[2]
