The currently untitled World War Z sequel is an upcoming American disaster action horror film in development at Paramount Pictures. It is intended to follow the 2013 film World War Z. Paramount confirmed at CinemaCon in April 2026 that a new film in the franchise was in development.[1][2][3]

Development
[edit]Before the release of World War Z, director Marc Forster and Paramount Pictures viewed the film as the start of a potential trilogy.[4] After the first film opened successfully in 2013, Paramount moved ahead with plans for a sequel with Brad Pitt set to reprise his role as Gerald "Gerry" Lane.[5] In December 2013, J. A. Bayona entered talks to direct and Steven Knight was hired to write the script in 2014.[6][7]
In 2015, Paramount scheduled the sequel for release on June 9, 2017, but Bayona left the project in January 2016 because of other commitments.[8][9] Later that year, David Fincher entered negotiations to direct the film.[10] In 2017, trade reports said Fincher was nearing a deal, while Paramount delayed the project from its previously announced release plans.[11][12]
By 2018, the sequel was being developed with Fincher and Pitt attached, and producer Dede Gardner said filming was expected to begin in 2019.[13][14] Paramount halted the project in February 2019.[15] In 2023, Fincher said his canceled version had been "a little like The Last of Us".[16][17]
At CinemaCon 2026, Paramount announced that a new World War Z film was in development. Contemporary coverage did not identify a director, writer, cast, or release date.[1][2][3] In September, it would be announced Pitt would return for the sequel, with Edward Berger set as director. Dennis Kelly will be writing the screenplay.[18]
