First talks of the film receiving a sequel were reported in March 2022 by The Hollywood Reporter, reporting that Paramount Pictures had pitched the idea of a TV series but that Cruise rejected it immediately.[1] In the summer of 2023, it was reported that Cruise was interested in making a sequel to the film.[2]

In November 2024, it was reported that Tom Cruise was interested in making a sequel to the 1990 racing film Days of Thunder. After wrapping up "Mission: Impossible 8", and already working towards a Top Gun 3 film with Paramount Pictures, the timing of which project went forward with Paramount first would depend on which script Cruise ultimately preferred.[3]

On June 23, 2025, in an interview with Jerry Bruckheimer on the red carpet for the F1 movie, Bruckheimer confirmed the film was in development[4]

In March 2026, Motorsports insiders Jayski's Silly Season Site and Adam Stern reported that Will Staples had met with several current NASCAR Cup Series teams and drivers to begin writing the sequel. He was reported as being seen at the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race and the 2026 Daytona 500.[5][6] In July 2026, Jonathan Levine was in talks to direct the film. Principal photography is expected to begin in early 2027.[7] In August 2026, Anne Hathaway joined the cast, and Jonathan Levine was confirmed to direct the film.[8]
