Typhoon Neoguri was a powerful and long-lived tropical cyclone in the Western Pacific Ocean which existed during mid-September 2025. The nineteenth named storm and seventh typhoon of the 2025 Pacific typhoon season, Neoguri originated from a disturbance north of Wake Island on September 17.

On September 17, an area of convection formed 219 nm (406 km) north of Wake Island, with multispectral imagery showed an ill-defined LLCC and flaring convection wrapping along the western periphery.[1] JMA also began issuing bulletins on the same system, recognizing as a tropical depression at 21:00 JST (12:00 UTC).[2] At 22:20 JST (13:20 UTC), JMA subsequently upgraded the depression and designated it as Tropical Storm Neoguri. Around 12:00 JST (03:00 UTC) of September 19, JMA further upgraded Neoguri into a severe tropical storm due to the presence of favorable environment and warm 29–30 °C (84–86 °F) sea surface temperatures,[3] with curved convective banding began to encircle the obscured LLCC and a well-defined microwave eye feature.[4] Both agencies were upgraded into minimal typhoon status early the next day as low-level cloud lines continued to wrap beneath the primary convective structure.[5] The JTWC also noted a persistent and bursting convection wrapping around the ragged eye feature, located above the LLCC, as the system began to rapidly intensify while moving west-northwestwards.[6] At 09:00 UTC, JTWC upgraded Neoguri to a Category 2-equivalent typhoon, as satellite imagery indicated a well-organized system featuring a tightly wrapped core and a ragged eye that had developed over the previous six hours.[7] JMA soon upgraded the system into the first very strong typhoon of the year at 18:00 JST (09:00 UTC). Benefiting from warm sea surface temperatures and low wind shear, Neoguri underwent extreme intensification, with maximum sustained winds increasing by 55 knots (102 km/h; 63 mph) over 24 hours.[8] A large, circular axisymmetric eye also became increasingly well-defined, with satellite estimates showing a temperature of 19 °C (66 °F), indicating a powerful and well-organized cyclone.[8] Around 09:00 JST on September 21, the JMA upgraded Neoguri to a violent typhoon, with a minimum central pressure of 920 hPa (27.17 inHg).[9] The storm later reached its peak intensity of a Category 4-equivalent typhoon, with 1-minute sustained winds of 230 km/h (145 mph) and minimum central pressure of 936 hPa (27.64 inHg).[10] Neoguri then began to curve northwestwards as it slowed down over the past six hours.[10] Significant weakening later ensued at 15:00 UTC, as satellite imagery showed rapidly cycling core convection with an obscured eye as it moves north-northwest.[11] Neoguri further shifted northward, with a deep midlatitude shortwave trough began to interact with the system's western periphery.[12] Neoguri also showed warming cloud tops, with upwelling and high vertical wind shear further hindering the development.[13] Satelite imagery depicted a highly asymmetric structure, with deep convection struggling to persist due to persistent southwesterly (20–25 kts) vertical wind shear as it moves east-northeastwards.[14] Additionally, an upper-level trough located to the northwest enhanced poleward outflow but simultaneously imposed hostile environmental conditions, contributing to the typhoon's continued structural decay.[14]
