Toluna is a market research company headquartered in London, England. Founded in France in 2000 by Frédéric-Charles Petit, the company provides market research services internationally. Toluna has expanded through a series of acquisitions, including the European operations of MetrixLab, Harris Interactive, KuRunData, and GutCheck.
History
[edit]Toluna was founded in Paris in 2000 by Frédéric-Charles Petit. The company's original business model was based on collecting consumer opinions about products and services through an online community.[1]
The company subsequently focused its activities on market research and the development of online research panels and survey software. Between 2002 and 2003, it introduced Automate Survey and Panel Portal, software used for survey creation and panel management. By 2004, more than half of the company's revenue was generated outside France.[1]
Toluna was admitted to the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange in 2005. The listing raised approximately £5 million to support the company's international expansion.[1] Toluna subsequently opened offices in several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Australia.[1]
The company acquired German online research company Speedfacts in 2005 and US digital data collection company Common Knowledge in 2008.[2]
Toluna expanded its North American operations in 2009 through the acquisition of the Internet Survey Solutions division of Greenfield Online from Microsoft for $40 million. As part of the transaction, Belgian investment company Verlinvest acquired a 13.38% stake in Toluna. The acquisition increased the company's workforce to more than 700 employees across 11 countries and its corporate client base to more than 1,000 companies.[2]
In 2011, Toluna was taken private through an acquisition by ITWP Acquisitions, a company backed by Verlinvest. The transaction valued Toluna at approximately £161.6 million.[3]
ITWP, Toluna's parent company, acquired Harris Interactive's operations in France, Germany and the United Kingdom from Nielsen in 2014.[4] Toluna later acquired Shanghai-based research and data collection company KuRunData in 2018.
In 2020, the company launched Toluna Start, an online market research platform. It acquired US-based market research company GutCheck in 2022 and MetrixLab in 2023.
Operations
[edit]Toluna conducts quantitative and qualitative market research and operates online research panels used to recruit participants for consumer research. Its activities include research relating to brands, advertising, products and consumer behavior.
The company also develops technology used to conduct market research. Its early software included Automate Survey and Panel Portal, introduced in the early 2000s, followed by the self-service research platform QuickSurveys.[1] Toluna Start, introduced in 2020, is the company's current research platform.
Toluna's online research community operates under the name Toluna Influencers. The company also operates TolunaID, which provides panel and sampling services to market research agencies and consultancies.
