Thing Is a Thing is the debut studio album by the Polish rock band Heldorado. Recorded in 2010, it was self-released on CD on 17 November 2011 without a record label,[1] and made available on digital platforms in 2013.[2] The material was recorded at Jet Studios in Nowy Dwór near Bydgoszcz, a studio run by recording engineer Maciej Feddek of Koronowo.[3][4] The release was issued under the patronage of the Marshal's Office of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.[1]
Background
[edit]The band began work on the album after a series of festival successes, including winning the Grand Prix at the National MONAR Song Festival in 2009 and a charity tour of MONAR rehabilitation centres.[5] The recordings were made by the lineup of Artur Bromirski (vocals), Michał Chrapkowski (classical guitar), Abdoulaye Faye (djembe, vocals), Karol Korniluk (electric guitar), Umut Otyakmaz (drums) and Krzysztof Ratke (bass guitar).[4]
The album reflects the band's characteristic blend of rock, folk, world music and elements of rap — a style the musicians called "galop" — combining Polish and West African rhythms.[6] Lyrics are in English, Polish and Wolof.
Promotion
[edit]The album's first music video, for "Take The Risk", was directed by Yach Paszkiewicz, a Bydgoszcz native known as "the father of the Polish music video", who directed over 400 videos.[7][8] It was shot by the director's son, Yach Jr Paszkiewicz, and published on 1 August 2012.[7]

[edit]In 2024, the album track "Na Stromej Skale" was re-recorded as a charity version on the initiative of the Bydgoszcz band Butelki Zwrotne, to support the cancer treatment of a local musician. Several dozen musicians took part, including Adela Konop and members of Bydgoscy Bluesmani, Heldorado, Jazz For Sale, Sigals and Żuki.[10] The campaign was covered by TVP3 Bydgoszcz and Polish Radio PiK.[11][12]
