Thein Zaw (Burmese: ကိုသိန်းဇော်; also known as Zaw Zaw (ဇော်ဇော်); born 14 September 1984) is a Myanmar librarian and book-sharing advocate. He is known for establishing free libraries and promoting access to books through free lending and bicycle delivery services.[1]

Early life and education

Thein Zaw (also known as Zaw Zaw) was born in Si Tha Village, Kyaukpadaung Township, Mandalay Region, Myanmar. He grew up in a farming and manual-labor family and developed an interest in reading and literature from an early age. He received education up to Grade 4.[2]

Library work

In 2007, Zaw Zaw established the Mandalay Free Library. He provided books to local residents free of charge and also delivered books to people’s homes by bicycle. He used various methods to encourage people to read, including providing guitars and other activities for readers. He later aimed to establish free libraries throughout Myanmar.[3]

Awards and recognition

In 2015, Zaw Zaw received a special Citizen of Burma Award for establishing and operating the free Mandalay Library in Yangon. In 2016, he was selected as a person worthy of recognition for July by State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi for his contributions to social and educational activities.[4] In August 2016, Zaw Zaw was recognized as a person worthy of praise for July by State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.[5] He was recognized for his efforts to make books accessible to the public, establish free libraries, and encourage younger generations to read and learn.[6][7][8]
