Draft:The Equity

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Equity is an English-language weekly community newspaper based in Shawville, Quebec, covering the Pontiac region in western Quebec.[1][2]

History

[edit]
The inaugural edition of The Equity, published June 7, 1883.

The Equity was founded on June 7, 1883, by John Cowan and Henry Thomas Smith in Bryson, Quebec, relocating its operations to Shawville in 1888.[1] The Cowan family owned and operated the publication until 1948.[3]

Following brief interim management, David and Rosaleen Dickson purchased the newspaper in 1953 and established its publishing entity, Pontiac Printshop Ltd.[3][4] Rosaleen Dickson served as the newspaper's editor for over 30 years.[4][5]

Dickson Family Era & Media Expansion

[edit]

Management of the paper later passed to members of the Dickson family, including Ross Dickson.[4] During his career in media publishing, Ross Dickson worked with The Equity and helped establish the Ottawa political news organization The Hill Times in 1989 alongside Rosaleen Dickson and Jim Creskey, as well as the alternative newsweekly Ottawa XPress in 1993.[4][6]

In January 2025, local media executive Jon Stewart acquired The Equity and Pontiac Printshop Ltd. through Calumet Media, ending 72 years of continuous Dickson family ownership while keeping family members in newsroom leadership roles.[3]
