Tensor Auto Inc. is a Physical AI and autonomous vehicle technology company headquartered in San Jose, California.[1] Founded in 2016 by computer vision scientist Dr. Jay Xiao, the company develops Level 4 autonomous vehicles ("robocars") designed for dual deployment: direct personal consumer ownership and commercial ride-hailing/fleet operations.[1][2][3]
History
[edit]Early Operations as AutoX (2016–2020)
[edit]Tensor was founded in Silicon Valley in 2016 by Dr. Jay Xiao alongside a team of American AI scientists and engineers under the AutoX brand.[4] Prior to founding the company, Xiao was a computer science PhD from MIT and professor at Princeton University specializing in 3D deep learning, computer vision, and robotics.[4]
In February 2017, the company obtained its initial autonomous vehicle testing permit from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and began public road testing in Silicon Valley.[5] In 2018, AutoX launched an autonomous grocery and pilot delivery service in San Jose, completing over 1,000 self-driving delivery orders.[5]
In 2019, the company secured California's second California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) permit to test autonomous rides for the general public, while simultaneously expanding operations into China.[5] In 2020, AutoX received California's second fully driverless testing permit (without a human safety driver) and launched a fully driverless robotaxi fleet in China.[6] Following the initial commercial deployment of its driverless fleet, the company fully discontinued the AutoX brand and its China-based operations, pivoting its strategic focus toward personal vehicle ownership.[1][6]
Re-emergence and Tensor Unveiling (2020–Present)
[edit]In 2020, the company returned to stealth development under the Tensor brand to engineer a purpose-built Level 4 autonomous vehicle for both individual consumer ownership and robotaxis.[1][2]
In August 2025, Tensor publicly unveiled its flagship product, the Tensor Robocar.[2] Together with the launch, Tensor unveiled its manufacturing partner VinFast, robotaxi fleet partner Lyft, AI superscaler partner Oracle, and tier-1 suppliers including Autoliv.[7][3]
Commercialization markets
[edit]Tensor targets global commercial rollouts across the United States, Europe, and the Middle East:
- United Arab Emirates: In December 2025, Tensor received Federal Regulations Lab (RegLab) approval from the UAE government, in partnership with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Abu Dhabi's Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), to test Level 4 personal autonomous vehicles across the Emirates ahead of planned commercial deployment.[8]
- United States & Europe: In 2025 and 2026, Tensor announced commercial agreements and fleet partnerships, including a luxury fleet deployment agreement with ride-hailing platform Lyft.[3]
Technology and architecture
[edit]The Tensor Robocar is built on an agentic onboard architecture engineered to process sensor inputs locally, enabling autonomous decision-making without continuous cloud reliance.[9] The company has described its long-term vision as enabling individuals to own their own personal artificial general intelligence (AGI), with founder and CEO Dr. Jay Xiao stating the company is "building a world where individuals own their personal AGI agents, enhancing freedom, privacy and autonomy."[10][11]
Key technical and architectural features include:
- Arm Processor Compute Platform: Each vehicle integrates 433 Arm-based compute cores (including Neoverse AE for high-throughput AI, Cortex-X for agentic AI processing, Cortex-A, Cortex-R, and Cortex-M cores) alongside NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor SoCs to power onboard foundation models and drive-by-wire subsystems.[9]
- NVIDIA Compute Platform: The vehicle's central compute cluster is built around eight NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor system-on-chips based on the Blackwell GPU architecture, delivering more than 8,000 TOPS of GPU compute performance to power onboard foundation models and autonomous driving subsystems.[12][13]
- Agentic AI Platform: Operates multimodal onboard Large Language Models (LLMs) and reasoning systems that handle natural-language conversational interaction, dynamic cabin adaptation, and autonomous navigation.[9]
- Dual-Mode Driving: A steer-by-wire system developed in partnership with Autoliv that enables transitions between manual driving and Level 4 autonomous operation.[14]
- Retractable Controls: In autonomous mode, the yoke steering wheel and the pedals automatically retract into the dashboard and floor, respectively, to expand interior cabin space.[14][15]
- Data Privacy Architecture: Vehicle data is processed onboard rather than continuously relayed to the cloud, and the companion smartphone app uses end-to-end encryption.[10][16]
- Liability & Insurance Partnership: Tensor has partnered with global insurance broker Marsh to develop what is billed as the first dedicated insurance policy for privately owned autonomous vehicles.[17]
- Sensor Infrastructure: A sensor suite comprising 37 cameras, 5 lidars, 11 radars, 22 microphones, 10 ultrasonic sensors, and 3 IMUs integrated with safety redundancies.[9]
