Tellus is a peer-reviewed scientific journal covering research in Earth system science, including meteorology, oceanography, atmospheric science, climatology, biogeochemistry, and hydrology. The journal was established in 1948 by meteorologist Carl-Gustaf Rossby at the International Meteorological Institute in Stockholm.[1]

Originally published as a single journal, Tellus was divided in 1983 into two companion series: Tellus A: Dynamic Meteorology and Oceanography and Tellus B: Chemical and Physical Meteorology. In 2025 the two series were merged again under the unified title Tellus.

History

Tellus was founded in 1948 by Carl-Gustaf Rossby, a pioneer of modern meteorology, as an international journal for research in atmospheric and geophysical sciences.[2]

In 1983 the journal was divided into two companion series reflecting the growing specialization of atmospheric science:

  • Tellus A: Dynamic Meteorology and Oceanography
  • Tellus B: Chemical and Physical Meteorology

Both series published research in atmospheric and ocean sciences and were widely used venues for research on climate dynamics, atmospheric chemistry, and ocean circulation.

The journals adopted an open-access publishing model in 2012. Publication was managed by Co-action Publishing until 2015, after which the journals were published by Taylor & Francis. In 2022 responsibility for publication was transferred to Stockholm University Press.

In 2025 the two series were merged again into a single journal under the original title Tellus. The unified journal continues the publication of research in Earth system science.

Tellus publishes research on processes within and interactions between components of the Earth system. Topics covered include:

  • Atmospheric dynamics and physics
  • Ocean circulation and air–sea interaction
  • Climate variability and climate change
  • Atmospheric chemistry and aerosols
  • Biogeochemical cycles
  • Hydrological processes
  • Earth system modelling
  • Climate–biosphere interactions

The journal publishes research articles, review articles, perspectives, and commentaries.

Publishing model

Tellus is an open-access scientific journal. All articles are freely available online and are published under Creative Commons licenses. Articles are peer-reviewed and evaluated by an international editorial board of researchers in Earth system science.

The journal and its earlier series are indexed in major bibliographic databases, including the Scopus database (1972–1987) and the Directory of Open Access Journals.[3][4]

Significance

Since its founding in 1948, Tellus has been one of the long-standing journals in meteorology and geophysical research. Early issues included influential contributions to atmospheric dynamics, climate theory, and ocean circulation.[5][6]

Highly cited papers published in the journal include works by scientists such as Willi Dansgaard, Edward Lorenz, Klaus Hasselmann, Henry Stommel, and James Lovelock.
