Tamar Levi is a multilingual artist, author and comedian. Born in Cornwall and raised in Alaska, she has been based in Europe and has worked in painting, illustration, children's publishing, performance and education. Her artwork includes continuous-line drawings and paintings exhibited internationally.

Early life and education

[edit]

Levi was born in Truro, Cornwall, and was raised in Anchorage, Alaska.

Levi studied Philosophy at King's College London and subsequently completed postgraduate study in Psychology and Education at the University of Cambridge.

She later undertook doctoral research at the University of Roehampton, for which she won the 2012 Santander Scholarship and Mobility Fund.[1]

[2] In June 2012, Levi presented research at the University of Roehampton's Communication in Context conference. Her presentation concerned her doctoral research into literature and human rights.[3]

An interview with Levi was commissioned for the Camden Encounters Project, a project associated with Camden London Borough Council, to commemorate her founding a community critique group for local authors.[4][5][6][7]

Levi's portrait, photographed and included in a presentation curated by Elly Clarke, was displayed in Camden Town Hall[8] and The Roundhouse, London in 2015.[9][10]

Books and illustration

[edit]

Levi has worked as an illustrator, editor and author in educational and children's publishing.

Her published books and collaborations include The If Machine: Philosophical Enquiry in the Classroom (2011), by Peter Worley, for which she edited content and illustrated stories.[11]

She also contributed to The Philosophy Shop (2012), edited by Peter Worley,[12] Thoughtings (2012), by Peter Worley and Andrew Day,[13] The If Odyssey (2012), by Peter Worley,[14] and My Autism Book: A Child's Guide to Their Autism Spectrum Diagnosis (2013), which Levi co-authored, illustrated and for which she provided the cover art, with Glòria Durà-Vilà.[15][16]

Her other publishing collaborations include Once Upon an If: The Storythinking Handbook (2014), by Peter Worley,[17] The Numberverse (2014), by Andrew Day,[18] Provocations: Philosophy for Secondary School (2014), by David Birch,[19] and Me and My PDA: A Guide to Pathological Demand Avoidance for Young People (2018), by Glòria Durà-Vilà and Levi.[20]

Smaller collaborations include providing cover art and illustrations for Cycle Lifestyle issue 9 (2013),[21][22] as well as illustrations for the University of Notre Dame's Mellon Philosophy as a Way of Life Project (2019).[23]

Non-English language works include cover art for the Greek-language poetry trilogy of Athanasia Katsigianni,[24][25][26][27][28]

Her other international-language work includes illustrations for the Greek theatre production brochure of Bonnie and Clyde (2012),[29] film stills and storyboard illustrations for the Japanese short film Snowchild, directed by Uta Arning (2012),[30] work for Greek OZON magazine (2013),[31] Greek-to-English editing for Paediatric Pulmonary Function Testing: Indications and Interpretation (2016),[32] the Francophone card game Consentement t'en dis quoi?,[33] and the French-language theatre play DELPHI.[34]

Levi illustrated several books and book covers in Peter Worley's Philosophy Foundation series.[35]

The Philosophy Shop received a Gold award in the Philosophy category of the 2012 Foreword Reviews INDIES and was subsequently recognised by the Education Resources Awards and the New England Book Festival.[36][37][38]

The If Odyssey and Once Upon an If received recognition in the Education Resources Awards and Bronze awards in the Primary Teacher Update Annual Awards. Provocations was shortlisted for an Education Resources Award.[39]

Levi's work as an illustrator is documented by Bloomsbury[40] and Hachette[41] publisher records. The If Machine was launched at British Museum.[42] Her books are also listed in international library and bibliographic catalogues.

Visual art

[edit]

Levi's visual art includes painting, pen-and-ink illustration and continuous-line drawing. Her work has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in Belgium and elsewhere.[43]

In 2017, her paintings were exhibited in a solo show at the European Parliament in Brussels. The exhibition was reported by Greek news outlets including ERT,[44] Patris[45] and News 24/7.[46]

In 2018, her paintings were exhibited in solo shows, Past, Present & Future at CliqueArt, curated by Bengi Lostar Ozdemir,[47] and Great Minds at Green Door Gallery, Brussels, curated by Helen O'Sullivan-Tyrrell.[48]

For both exhibitions she was interviewed by Greek public television (ERT).[49][50]

In 2019, Levi's portrait of 19 children was commissioned and put on permanent exhibition at a school in Brussels.[51]

In 2020, Levi presented Immensities, a solo exhibition at ArtBase in Brussels. The exhibition was covered by Mega Channel,[52] We Love Brussels,[53] BRUZZ TV[54] and the Greek newspaper Efimerida ton Syntakton, which described the works as paintings inspired by Greek landscapes and places.[55]

Her portrait was photographed by director Anja Strelec.[56][57]

Levi also produced a series of continuous-line portraits for the European Parliament's Feminist Forum in 2020. The project was subsequently discussed in Brussels press and cultural coverage.[53]

The original cover art Levi provided for Athanasia Katsigianni's poetry trilogy was exhibited in 2024 at O Philologikos Syllogos Parnassou (Ο Φιλολογικός Σύλλογος «Παρνασσός»).[58]

In early 2025, Levi's solo show From Muse to Artist opened at The Nine, Brussels.[59] Another solo show opened in late 2025 at the Maison Culturelle Belgo Albanaise on Brussels' Grand Place, featuring Levi's paintings of the Grand Place.[60]

Theatre and performance

[edit]

Levi developed DELPHI, a multidisciplinary children's theatre production combining live visual art, music and acting. The project originated as a graphic novel written in English and was adapted into a French stage work in which Levi creates continuous-line drawings live during the performance.

An early live version of DELPHI was presented as part of TEDxULB in Brussels in October 2020, with Levi performing live continuous-line art alongside flute player Kalliopi Bolovinou.[61]

The production was subsequently developed in Belgium with the Kaleidoscope production team and received funding through Un Futur Pour La Culture of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. Development included workshops and residencies involving Belgian theatre venues and performers.

In March 2023, DELPHI was performed at Le Senghor in Brussels and at the Columban Theatre in Wavre. The Brussels Times described it as a multidisciplinary children's production addressing grief and emotional change, with Levi visually creating the protagonist's journey through live one-line drawings.[34]

Comedy

[edit]

Levi has performed stand-up comedy in Belgium, in both English and Greek, and has appeared in media coverage of the Brussels comedy scene.[62][63][64]

In 2024, BRUZZ profiled Levi as an artist and stand-up comedian, describing her work in comedy alongside her background in illustration and children's publishing.[65]

Charity and non-profit work

[edit]

Beginning in the early 2010s, Levi worked with Novel Rights, a social-enterprise digital publishing initiative focused on literature and human rights. Her work included illustration and cover design for short fiction published through the project as well as promotional materials, including material associated with the London School of Economics' Space for Thought Literary Festival in 2013.[66]

Levi has donated art to promote the i=u music festival in 2013,[67] donated art for auction by the European Federation of Associations of Families of People with Mental Illness (EUFAMI), donated art for auction by Promote Ukraine,[68] provided professional portraits of participants during the European Union Eastern Partnership Civil Society Facility event,[69] and donated art to Autism Europe.[70]

Levi also designed a card game with Mathilde Borchard based on consent for the Fédération des centres pluralistes de planning familial (FCPPF) and L'Estime ASBL.[71]

Levi participated in fundraising connected with Darkness Into Light Belgium, a suicide-prevention and mental-health initiative. In 2024, the Greek newspaper Efimerida ton Syntakton reported on Levi's involvement in fundraising connected with a Darkness Into Light event at the Irish Embassy in Brussels and described artwork donated by her for fundraising and sold through Green Door Gallery.[72]

Levi met with Roberta Metsola, president of the European Parliament, in connection with mental-health awareness and Darkness Into Light Brussels.[73] The Bulletin also reported on charity art sales involving original Levi pen-and-ink drawings.[74]

Levi's artwork was turned into gold, silver and bronze medals for the LUNA International Space Competition, a science programme for schools.[75][76][77]
