Stephen Belcher is a British atmospheric scientist and the current Chief Scientist at the UK Met Office, where he leads research and development in weather and climate science.[1]

He is internationally recognised for his contributions to meteorology, climate modelling, and science policy.[2][non-primary source needed]

Early life and education

Belcher earned an MA (Hons) in Mathematics from Jesus College, University of Cambridge in 1986,[3] followed by a PhD in fluid dynamics from the University of Cambridge in 1990.[1]

His doctoral research on turbulent flow over hills and waves was supervised by Lord Julian Hunt, a leading figure in fluid dynamics and meteorology.[1][4]

Career

Before joining the Met Office, Belcher held academic positions at the University of Cambridge, Stanford University and the University of Reading.[1] At Reading, he served as Professor of Meteorology and Head of School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences.[1][5]

During this period, he led an internationally recognised group in boundary-layer meteorology and oceanography, with work that contributed algorithms later incorporated into Met Office weather and climate models.[2][5]

Belcher joined the Met Office in 2012 as Director of the Met Office Hadley Centre.[2] He was appointed Chief Scientist in 2016, leading and managing the Met Office's scientific programme.[6] His leadership has helped sustain the Met Office's global reputation in weather forecasting, emergency hazard response, and climate change research.[2] He also represents the Met Office internationally, helping align UK environmental science with global initiatives.[2]

Belcher has published widely on atmospheric boundary layers, urban meteorology, climate modelling, and environmental risk.[4] He is known for translating complex scientific findings into actionable policy and operational guidance.[7]

Belcher is a member of the UK Government Chief Scientific Advisers network.[8][1] He currently chairs the World Meteorological Organization Scientific Advisory Panel.[9][10]
