Stade Tessema (ملعب تيسيما) is a multi-purpose football stadium located in the Sidi Othmane district of Casablanca, Morocco. Originally opened in September 1915 as the Stade Municipal, the stadium has historically served as a local sporting hub for domestic club matches and youth academies.[2]

As part of Morocco's national sports infrastructure development program, the venue underwent a complete demolition and reconstruction project to transform it into a modern 30,000-seat stadium.[3]

History

[edit]

The stadium was originally opened in September 1915 under the French protectorate as the Stade Municipal. Over the decades, it served as the long-time home ground for CO Casablanca before the club's dissolution in 1995. It subsequently hosted regional league matches, as well as home fixtures for the women's section of Raja CA and local club CWW Casablanca.

Named in honor of Ethiopian sports executive Ydnekatchew Tessema, former president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

2026 Reconstruction Project

[edit]

In early 2026, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), in partnership with the National Agency for Public Facilities (ANEP), launched a major redevelopment initiative on the 7-hectare site to replace the old venue with a modern stadium capacity of 30,000 seats.[4]

The project progressed in multiple phases:

  • January 2026: A MAD 22 million contract was awarded for technical studies and infrastructure monitoring.
  • April 2026: A MAD 36.4 million contract was allocated for demolition, earthworks, and site preparation.
  • June 2026: The main structural construction contract (gros œuvre), valued at MAD 1.6 billion (MMDH), was launched with an 18-month execution schedule.
