Sophia Loeb (born 1997) is a Brazilian painter based in London, England.[1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Loeb was born in 1997 in São Paulo, Brazil.[2] She moved to the United Kingdom at 18 to complete a foundation year at Camberwell College of Arts, before earning a BA in Fine Art and History of Art at Goldsmiths, University of London and an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in London.[3][4]

Career

[edit]

Loeb has had solo exhibitions with Pippy Houldsworth Gallery in London, including Todos os Seres são de Todos os Seres (All Beings are of All Beings) (2023) and O Manifesto da Luz antes do Amanhecer (The Manifesto of Light Before Dawn) (2026), and with Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel in Rio de Janeiro, including Panta Rei sobre a Estrata (2025).[5] Her work has been included in group exhibitions at venues including Pace Gallery in Los Angeles, Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York, and a touring exhibition presented at Le Consortium in Dijon and the X Museum in Beijing.[6] She has undertaken residencies at the School of Visual Arts in New York and Kaaysa Arte Residência in São Paulo.[7]

Work

[edit]

Loeb takes a sculptural approach to painting, building layered compositions in oil, acrylic, oil stick, and hand-applied pigment, which she scrapes, reworks, and reapplies to build a dense, tactile surface.[8] She works on her canvases from multiple angles, rotating and tilting them as she paints, a process she has described as recording her own bodily movement.[9] Her resulting paintings are abstract landscapes that draw on her childhood in Brazil, exploring the interconnectedness of natural and universal systems.[10]

Critical reception

[edit]

Writing in Galerie Magazine, a critic described Loeb's paintings as radiant and otherworldly, calling for a harmonious relationship between humankind and nature.[11] In a 2026 interview with Ocula, Loeb discussed her use of fog and light as recurring subjects, describing her fascination with the way light travels and is perceived.[12] Profiling the artist for W Magazine in 2026, a writer described her hyper-contemporary impressionist style and thick, impasto layers as having become her calling card since she first gained wider attention several years earlier.[13]

Collections

[edit]

Loeb's work is held in public and private collections including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; the Albertina, Vienna; the Toledo Museum of Art; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; the Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas; the Rachofsky Collection, Dallas; the Shah Garg Foundation, New York; the Museu Inimá de Paula, Belo Horizonte; and the Olivia Foundation, Mexico City.[14]
