Since August is a Canadian rock band from Fredericton, New Brunswick, formed in 1997 by students at the University of New Brunswick. Originally known as Even, the band signed to Toronto's Loggerhead Records in August 2000 and changed its name after discovering an Australian act was already using it. Their self-titled debut album, produced by Paul Northfield, was released in 2001 and included the charting single "Too Gone." The band was nominated for a 2002 East Coast Music Award for Rock Recording of the Year.

History

[edit]

Formation as Even (1997–2000)

[edit]

Since August formed in 1997 when Doug Larlee, Derek McLaughlin (drums) and Joel Green, all from Perth-Andover, New Brunswick, met fellow University of New Brunswick students Ethan Young-Lai and Pat Walsh, both from St. Andrews.[1] Performing under the name Even, the group built a local following as a cover band before beginning to write original material, recording a three-song demo with Lloyd Hanson in November 1999.[1]

In 2000, Even entered its song "Can You Feel the Rain" into an online Battle of the Bands contest run by the beer.com website, submitted from among more than 500 entries. The song won the contest, earning the band a North American tour that included showcase performances at the Viper Room in Los Angeles, the Mercury Lounge in New York City, and an opening slot for Kid Rock at The Docks in Toronto.[1][2] Following the tour, the band signed with Loggerhead Records, a label headed by Andrew McCain, in August 2000.[2][3]

Name change and debut album (2000–2002)

[edit]

Shortly after signing, the band learned that an Australian act was already recording under the name Even, and undertook a search for a new name, eventually settling on Since August.[3][1] As Since August, the band recorded its self-titled debut album at Le Studio, a residential studio in Morin Heights, Quebec, where Rush recorded seven albums between 1979 and 1993 and where acts including the Police, David Bowie and the Bee Gees had also worked. The album was produced and engineered by Paul Northfield — the engineer on Rush's Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals who later produced the band's 2002 album Vapor Trails — who had also worked with Ozzy Osbourne, I Mother Earth and Marilyn Manson.[1][4]

Since August was released in 2001 on Loggerhead Records.[1][5] The lead single, "If You," received rotation on Canadian music video outlets including MuchMusic, MuchLoud, and Edge TV,[4] while a subsequent single, "Too Gone," reached the top 60 of the Canadian rock radio charts.[6] The band was named one of Canada's "picks-to-click" for 2001 by Access Magazine.[7]

In 2002, Since August was nominated for the East Coast Music Award for Rock Recording of the Year, alongside Sloan and The Joel Plaskett Emergency; the award was won by Crush.[8]

2026 reissue

[edit]

In 2026, to mark the album's 25th anniversary, the band released Between One & Two, a set of recordings from 2003 that had not previously received a formal release.[9]
