Shark? (stylized with a ?) is an American pop-punk alternative rock band based in Brooklyn, New York.[1] The band is made up of Kevin Diamond, Andy Kinsey, Andy Swerdlow, Chris Mulligan, and Jared Hiller.[2][3] The band is best known for their song California Grrls, which was featured in Grand Theft Auto V.

History

[edit]

Shark? released their first EP, I'm an Animal, on November 10th, 2009[4] under their own label Lby Music.[5] During 2010, the band released Noise Maker, another EP, in January, and used Kickstarter to fund a "10-song record [to be] pressed on Vinyl and burned on CD," with the total amounting to $1572.[6] On January 1st, 2011, they released a new single Hip Hop Hooray, now under Oops Baby Records, later rereleased on May 1st, 2012 as Kreegah!.[7] Shark? then released another single, California Grrls, in 2012, and rereleased it on September 1st, 2013, both times under Old Flame Records, which would publish their music from then on.[8]

The same year, they released a new single, AOK, was released on August 13, 2013.[9] Shark? released their first album, True Waste, on September 1st, 2013. The album featured re-recordings on previously released songs such as the self-titled Shark?, Hip Hop Hooray, and I'm An Animal.[10] During 2013, they toured in Brookyln, but also Rhode Island and Michigan.[11]

During the month between albums, the band gained noteriety when their song, California Grrls, was featured in Grand Theft Auto V when it launched on September 17, 2013. It was played on the fictional in-game radio station Vinewood Boulevard Radio.

Shark? released their second album, Savior, on October 1st, 2013. It also had a few re-recordings of other songs by the band, including California Grrls[12], AOK, and This Is Living. Through 2013 and 2015, the band made videos, mainly music videos for select songs, that they posted to their YouTube channel.

The band released another EP, Summer Ale, on June 17, 2014. On March 10, 2015, they would release Hate Crime Girl as a distinct single from their upcoming EP, Becky and Debbie EP, which would release on April 21st of that year. After a hiatus, Shark? would return with a new EP, Abilene, on May 4, 2018.[13] After the release of Abilene, Shark? announced on Facebook that it was their last recording.

Despite that, Shark? returned their third full album, A Simple Life, on May 9th, 2025. Leading up to its release, songs from the album were put out individually as singles: King Of The Chaff on April 8th, TNT on April 22nd, and Won't Be Bad on April 29th.

Side projects

[edit]

Lead signer Kevin Diamond led a solo career as RAAMBS, releasing two albums: xtreme sports on February 24th, 2021, and Great Things on January 26, 2024. Diamond cites the hiatus of Shark?, preparation for having his first son, and the global pandemic as inspirations to pursue his solo career.[14]

Since 2015, the band's drummer, Chris Mulligan, has been part of a music project called Parlor Walls alongside Alyse Lamb. The duo released several singles and EPs, and also made three albums: Opposites on March 10th, 2017, Heavy Tongue on February 21st, 2020, and Big Crystal Dreams on April 3rd, 2026.[15]
