SafeGold is a digital gold platform with operations in India, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates, and a corporate presence in Singapore.[1]

Founded in 2017, it operates a business-to-business-to-consumer platform that allows partner companies to offer digital gold and other precious-metals-linked products to their customers. As of 2025, SafeGold was the largest digital gold platform in India, holding approximately 45% market share by volume.[2][3]

In 2024, the Financial Times and Statista ranked SafeGold ninth among Indian companies in their annual High Growth Companies Asia-Pacific list.[4][5]

History

[edit]

SafeGold was incorporated in 2017 by Gaurav Mathur. Mathur is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and previously co-founded India Equity Partners, a private equity firm that raised $350 million for its first fund. He also served on the board of Manappuram Finance, a gold-loan company.[6]

Rhea Chaterji, a law graduate of the London School of Economics, joined as co-founder and chief operating officer, having previously held roles at KPMG India and Startupbootcamp. Yash Bhansali, a graduate of the NYU Stern School of Business, joined as co-founder and chief executive officer of SafeGold's international operations. He had previously worked in EY's digital and innovation practice and at On Deck.

The company raised its first seed round in April 2017, with investors including Pravega Ventures, BEENEXT, InVent Capital and World Gold Council (India) Private Limited, a subsidiary of the World Gold Council.[7]

In 2020, SafeGold partnered with Amazon Pay and PhonePe to offer digital gold on the Amazon platform, with purchases starting from ₹5. In 2021, Tanishq, a jewellery brand of Titan Company and a subsidiary of the Tata Group, launched a co-branded digital gold product built on SafeGold's platform. In October 2022, SafeGold launched GAINS (Gold Accumulation and Investment Network by SafeGold), a platform for customers to lease digitally held gold to jewellers.[8][9][10]

The company subsequently expanded its operations into the United Arab Emirates, launching its digital gold offering through Liv, the digital banking platform of Emirates NBD, and e& money, the fintech platform of e&. The partnership with e& money enabled users in the UAE to buy, sell and redeem physically backed 24-karat gold through its digital platform.[7]

In May 2026, SafeGold co-founded the Digital Precious Metals Assurance Council of India alongside Augmont, PhonePe, Gullak and MMTC PAMP, a self-regulatory body for digital gold platforms in India.[11]

Operations

[edit]

Platform structure

[edit]

SafeGold provides digital gold infrastructure to partner platforms, which distribute the product to end customers.[7][11]

As of June 2026, SafeGold reported more than 83 million users globally and processed more than 4.5 million transactions per day.[12][13]

Each gold purchase made through a SafeGold-enabled platform results in an equivalent quantity of 24-karat gold, with a stated purity of 99.5%, being physically allocated to the customer in a vault operated by Brink's. Legal title to the gold rests with the customer, and the gold does not appear on SafeGold's balance sheet.

Vistra ITCL (India) Limited, an independent trustee, audits customer holdings and verifies that each gram recorded in a customer account is matched by physical gold held at the Brink's vault. Brink's holds a global insurance policy covering stored gold.[7][11]

Partnerships

[edit]

Its digital gold products have been made available through Amazon Pay, PhonePe, Jio, CRED, and Jupiter. In 2021, SafeGold and Tanishq, a jewellery brand of Titan Company, launched a co-branded digital gold product. SafeGold has also partnered with CaratLane, allowing customers to redeem eligible digital gold holdings for physical jewellery at its outlets. In November 2022, SafeGold announced a partnership with the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) to explore the development of a gold-backed digital assets ecosystem for the Middle East.[14][9]

Recognition

[edit]

The Financial Times and Statista ranked SafeGold ninth among Indian companies in the High-Growth Companies Asia-Pacific 2024 list, with an absolute revenue growth rate of 732% over the period from 2019 to 2022. The list ranks companies in the Asia-Pacific region by compound annual revenue growth, with a minimum qualifying CAGR of 15.1%.[4][5]
