Sabro Church (Danish: Sabro Kirke) is a Lutheran church in Sabro, part of Eshøj Pastorate.[1][2][3]
History
[edit]Early history
[edit]The church was built around 1175 and sits roughly 90 meters above sea level.[4]
In 1628, during the Thirty Years’ War, the church was temporarily used by soldiers to store grain, a practice that significantly disrupted Mass.[4]
Until the Reformation, the church was under the authority of the local archdeacon. When Frijsenborg manor was established in 1672, the church came under its ownership. Ownership of the church subsequently changed hands several times before it was transferred to the citizens of Sabro in 1813. On 1 January 1910, the church became independently owned. Today, it is part of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Denmark.[4]
Renovations
[edit]An inspection report from 1817 described the church as "dirty, dusty and neglected". Ten years later, in 1827, it underwent major repairs. A more comprehensive restoration was proposed in the 1890s, but was ultimately abandoned in favor of isolated repair work.[4] Further repairs were carried out in the 1960s, culminating in a visit by Henning Høirup, then Bishop of Aarhus.[5]
Artworks and other possessions
[edit]The church's current altarpiece dates from 1621, while a large Jesus portrait by Danish painter Poul Andreas Lüders depicting the Last Supper was added in 1851.[6][4]
The church owns a chalice dating from 1765, donated by Count Erhard Wedel-Friis, and an altar candlestick dating from 1588, donated by Laurids Rostrup and his wife. Additionally, the church possesses a crucifix dating from 1650, a baptismal font dating from 1873 and bells dating from the 15th century.[4]
