Draft:Royan Institute

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Royan Institute (Persian: پژوهشگاه رویان) is an Iranian research institute affiliated with the Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research (ACECR). It was established in 1991 by Saeid Kazemi Ashtiani and initially focused on reproductive biomedicine and infertility treatment. Its research activities subsequently expanded to include stem cell biology and biotechnology.[1][2]

History

[edit]

Royan Institute was established in Tehran in 1991 by Saeid Kazemi Ashtiani as a research institute concerned with reproductive biomedicine and infertility treatment.[1][2]

The institute became involved in the development of assisted reproductive technology in Iran. A study of the history of in vitro fertilization (IVF) in Iran identifies Royan as the first IVF clinic established in Tehran and reports that the first IVF baby born at the institute was delivered in 1993.[3]

During the 2000s, the institute expanded its activities into stem cell research. Studies of the development of stem cell research and technology in Iran have examined Royan Institute in relation to knowledge production, networking and innovation in the field.[4]

In 1998, the institute was approved by Iran's Ministry of Health as a centre for cell-based research.[2]

Research

[edit]

Royan Institute's research has included reproductive biomedicine, embryology, stem cell biology and biotechnology.[1][4]

In 2004, researchers affiliated with Royan Institute reported the derivation of a human embryonic stem cell line designated Royan H1 from a human blastocyst. The researchers reported that the cell line could be maintained in culture and differentiated into cell types including cardiomyocytes and neurons.[5]

Animal cloning

[edit]

Royan Institute has conducted research in animal cloning. In 2006, researchers at the institute produced a cloned sheep. Contemporary reporting by The Guardian described Iranian scientists as claiming that the animal was the first cloned sheep produced in the Middle East; the sheep died shortly after birth.[6]

In a 2008 paper, researchers at Royan reported the birth of a successfully cloned sheep named Royana and described it as the first successfully cloned sheep in Iran and the Middle East.[7]

In 2015, researchers at Royan Institute reported the successful cloning of an endangered Isfahan mouflon using a domestic sheep as a surrogate.[8]

Organization

[edit]

Royan Institute is affiliated with the Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research (ACECR) and a public non-profit research institute consisting of three research institutes: the Royan Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Technology, the Royan Institute for Reproductive Biomedicine, and the Royan Institute for Biotechnology.[9]

The Royan Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Technology and the Royan Institute for Reproductive Biomedicine are based in Tehran, while the Royan Institute for Biotechnology has research activities in Isfahan.[10][2][11]

Publications

[edit]

Royan Institute published the Cell Journal and the Iranian Journal of Fertility and Sterility.[2]
