Royal Credit Union is a state-chartered, federally insured credit union headquartered in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. It serves members in western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota, including the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area. In the March 2026 filing cycle, FinObservatory listed Royal fifth among Wisconsin credit unions by assets, with about US$5.9 billion in assets and 339,177 members.[1]
History
[edit]Royal Credit Union was founded in 1964 by employees of the Uniroyal Tire Company in Eau Claire.[2][3] The organization later expanded beyond its original employee group; by 1975 it had become a community credit union.[4]
Royal expanded into Minnesota through a 2009 merger with REAL Credit Union, which added three locations to its branch network.[2] In 2016, it acquired Capital Bank in Saint Paul and a Deerwood Bank office in Apple Valley, Minnesota.[2][5]
In 2021, Royal announced plans to acquire Lake Area Bank, a privately owned Minnesota bank with offices in Lindstrom, Forest Lake, Hugo, Stillwater, and White Bear Lake.[2] The deal was part of Royal's Minnesota expansion and involved approximately US$500 million in assets.[6] In 2022, Finance & Commerce reported that Royal had purchased the White Bear Lake branch property connected with the Lake Area Bank acquisition.[7]
Operations
[edit]Royal is organized as a 501(c)(14) state-chartered credit union.[8] Its reported total assets were US$5.33 billion at the end of 2024, according to IRS Form 990 data compiled by ProPublica.[8] NCUA call-report data compiled by FinObservatory listed Royal as the fifth-largest Wisconsin credit union by assets for the March 2026 filing cycle.[1]
CDFI Fund award
[edit]The Community Development Financial Institutions Fund, part of the United States Department of the Treasury, lists Royal as a credit union established in 1964 and records a 2016 CDFI Financial Assistance award allocation of US$2 million.[3]
