The Roux Prize is an annual award of US$100,000 given by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington to an individual who has applied health evidence, particularly Global Burden of Disease research, in ways that have improved population health.[1] It was established in 2013 by the American investor David Roux and his wife Barbara Roux, and first awarded in 2014.[1][2]
Recipients have included government ministers, journal editors, clinicians and software developers working in global health. The award has been described by IHME as the largest of its kind for evidence-based public health achievement.[1]
History
[edit]David Roux, a founding board member of IHME, and Barbara Roux established the prize in 2013 to recognise the application of disease burden research in practice.[1] During IHME's first decade, David Roux supported the institute's Global Burden of Disease project and advocated making its data more accessible to policymakers and practitioners.[1]
The first prize was awarded in 2014 to Rodrigo Guerrero, a physician and then mayor of Cali, Colombia, for a violence-prevention programme developed using epidemiological methods.[2][3]
Selection
[edit]Nominations are open to the public and are assessed by a selection committee that includes previous recipients of the award.[1] Nominations for each year's prize open on 1 November of the preceding year.[1] A full list of recipients is maintained by IHME.[4]
