Roderik S.W. van de Wal is a Dutch climatologist and glaciologist who serves as Professor of Sea Level Change and Coastal Impacts at Utrecht University.[1] His research focuses on understanding sea level rise, climate change, and the dynamics of the Greenland ice sheet and Antarctic ice sheet. With over 30,647 citations on Google Scholar,[2] he is a leading expert in polar climate science and cryosphere studies.
Early life and education
[edit]Van de Wal obtained his Master of Science in Physical Geography from Utrecht University (in combination with Stockholm University).[3] He completed a one-year post-academic trainee program at the IMAU before earning his PhD in 1992 under the supervision of Prof. Johannes Oerlemans. His doctoral thesis focused on "Ice and Climate."[3]
Career and research
[edit]Van de Wal has spent his entire academic career at Utrecht University, progressing from post-doctoral researcher to assistant professor (2006) and ultimately to full professor.[1][4] He holds a combined appointment at the faculties of Science and Geosciences, where he leads research at IMAU and the Department of Physical Geography.[5]
His research group investigates the stability of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, quantifying uncertainties in sea level rise projections, and studying paleoclimate through ice core analysis.[5] Van de Wal's work combines climate modelling with observational data to understand the interactions between ice sheets, oceans, and the atmosphere.[6]
Contributions to international assessments
[edit]Van de Wal has made significant contributions to international climate science assessments. He served as a lead author for the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC) and was a review editor for the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) chapter on sea level.[7] He also contributed to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th IPCC assessment reports on sea level rise.[3]
He is co-chair of the WMO Grand Challenge on Regional Sea Level Change and Coastal Impacts,[3] and has organized major international conferences on sea level rise in 2017 and 2022.[5]
Leadership and collaborations
[edit]Van de Wal has been principal investigator (PI) and co-PI for numerous national and international projects, as well as the NESSC (2014–2023)[5]
He serves on the steering committees of several major initiatives, including the CPOM and the ACE program of the SCAR.[3]
Van de Wal was also a member of the Dutch Delta Commission on sea level and has been a member of the Climate Commission of the KNAW.[3]
