Robert Royou Beard (10 March 1856 – 3 February 1932) was a British engineer, inventor, and chronophotographer whose work in gas‑pressure regulation, lantern technology, and early cinematographic apparatus made him a significant figure in late Victorian projection engineering.[1]
Early life and career
[edit]Beard was born in Peckham, London, in 1856.[2] He was apprenticed at the brass‑finishing firm J. T. Oakley & Co., where he rose from office boy to foreman. During this period he assisted W. H. Oakley in lantern exhibitions and became known as a skilled engineer and lanternist.[3]
Compressed gas became commercially available in the 1880s, offering advantages for single‑lantern projection but presenting difficulties for dissolving‑view lanterns, which required constant pressure adjustment. Beard and Oakley jointly patented a regulator intended to stabilise gas pressure, though the early design was considered too heavy for general use.[4]
Inventions and technical developments
[edit]Beard later developed a smaller and more practical gas regulator, manufactured by his own firm, R. R. Beard & Co., at 10 Trafalgar Road, Old Kent Road, London.[5]
Among his notable innovations was the Eclipse self‑centring carrier (1886), which allowed rapid slide changes without blanking the screen and without requiring the operator to lean over the lantern.[6]
Other devices marketed by Beard included:
- ether saturators
- mixed‑gas jets
- the Pringle–Beard bellow‑front lantern
- screw‑down valves and combined jet‑taps
- attachments for securing gas‑bag taps
These devices were widely used by lanternists and lecturers of the period.[7]
R. R. Beard & Co. also produced early cinematographic equipment, including a projector employing a Maltese‑cross intermittent mechanism.[8]
Patent 330,549: Fluid‑pressure regulator
[edit]Beard’s U.S. Patent No. 330,549 (issued 17 November 1885) described a sensitive pressure regulator designed for compressed gases used in oxyhydrogen and oxycalcium lighting.[9] The design used a weighted bellows and a dual‑threaded screw mechanism to maintain uniform delivery pressure. Contemporary technical literature noted its precision and suitability for lantern and laboratory applications.[10]
R. R. Beard Limited
[edit]Founded in 1882, R. R. Beard Limited became a prominent supplier of limelight and projection equipment during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.[11] The company’s catalogues featured lanterns, jets, regulators, and cinematographic apparatus used by lecturers, showmen, and early film exhibitors.
Family
[edit]Beard was the son of Robert Beard and Harriet Royou, whose family had French Huguenot origins.[12] His son Percy later recalled attending the Lumière Cinématographe exhibition at the Regent Street Polytechnic in 1896, an event that influenced the family’s interest in moving‑picture technology.[13]
Death
[edit]Beard died at his home in Leigh‑on‑Sea, Essex, in 1932. A later obituary in the Southend Standard described his long career in lantern engineering and his contributions to projection technology.[14]
