Ramarao Indira (born 22 April 1952) is an Indian sociologist. She is Professor of Eminence and Provost of Social Sciences and Allied Faculties at M. S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences in Bengaluru.[1]
Academic career
[edit]Indira was born on 22 April 1952 and received her school and college education in Mysuru. She completed her bachelor's degree with sociology and political science as majors in 1970, her master's degree in sociology in 1972 and her PhD in sociology in 1982, all from the University of Mysore.[1]
She joined the Department of Sociology at the University of Mysore in 1972 and continued teaching and research there until her superannuation in 2014. During her 42 years at the university, she served as a professor in the Department of Sociology and as Director of the International Centre. She also served as Honorary Director of the UGC Centre for Women's Studies.[1]
Indira has held a number of visiting and academic positions. These include Visiting Professor of the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Chair at the University of Mysore,[2] Visiting Fellow in the Department of Sociology at the University of Delhi, Visiting Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa,[3] and Scholar-in-Residence positions at Kuvempu University and Bangalore University.[1]
She has also designed and taught courses on gender, Indian society and development for international study programmes. These included programmes associated with the University of Iowa, Florida International University, Guelph University, Mount Allison University, Concordia University and other institutions in the United States and Canada.
Indira has been Professor of Eminence and Provost of Social Sciences and Allied Faculties at M. S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences in Bengaluru since 2023.[1]
Research
[edit]Indira's research interests include gender studies, development sociology, sociology of education and forest-dependent communities.
Her research has focused on gender issues, women's participation in forest management, girls' education and capacity building among women in institutions of local self-governance. Her research with forest-dependent communities in the Joida region of Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, has particularly examined women's empowerment and the relationship between development, forests and local communities.
Her research projects have included work on forest-dependent communities, women workers, girls and women in media, Panchayati Raj institutions and people living in protected areas.
Indira is a two-time Fulbright Scholar,[4] a four-time Shastri Fellow,[5] and a Senior Fellow of the Indian Council of Social Science Research. She has completed 21 research projects and guided 27 doctoral students.In 2019, a festschrift titled Thinking Gender: Socio-cultural Perspectives, edited by Shalini Suryanarayan, G. Shanthi and K. G. Gayathri Devi, was published in her honour by Concept Publishing Company, New Delhi. It was released at a public event at Manasagangothri, University of Mysore, presided over by the University's Vice-Chancellor.[6]
Her research projects have received support from organisations including the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, the Karnataka Forest Department, the Karnataka Evaluation Authority and other institutions.
Professional activities
[edit]Indira has been involved with professional organisations and civil society groups in the fields of sociology and gender studies. She served as President of the Indian Sociological Society during 2018–2019 and as Secretary during 2014–2015.[7] She also served as President of the Karnataka Sociology Association from 1999 to 2001.
Indira is Honorary President of the Alumni Association of the Department of Sociology, University of Mysore. She received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Mysore Alumni Association in 2019.
She served as Course Coordinator from 2014 to 2016 for the Society and Education course prepared under the E-PG Pathshala project, an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology.
She is President of Samruddhi Foundation, a civil society organisation working on capacity building and empowerment of women, students and forest-dependent communities.Indira has also been called on as an independent commentator on social issues by the press, including on the effects of work-from-home arrangements on working women.[8]
Publications
[edit]Indira has authored and edited books, journal articles, newspaper columns and other publications in Kannada and English.
Her books as an author include Women in Technical Education (1989) and Gender and Forest Management: The Joida Experiences (2002).
As an editor, she edited Themes in Sociology of Education, published by SAGE Publications in 2011, and co-edited the two-volume Gender and Society in India with D. K. Behera, published by Manak Publications in 1999.

Awards and honours
[edit]In 2022, the Indian Sociological Society conferred its Lifetime Achievement Award on Indira for her contribution to the discipline of sociology, presented at the 47th All India Sociological Conference held at the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya, in December 2022.[11]
She received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Mysore Alumni Association in 2019.
She has received the H. S. Parvathi Endowment Award (2016) for issue-based writing and the Sadodita Award (2011) for contributions to research and writing with a social and gender orientation.
She has also received the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Mooknayak Award from the Karnataka Media Academy, Government of Karnataka, for her columns in Kannada newspapers concerning people and groups in society's margins.[12]In 2023, Rotary Mysore Midtown conferred on her the Prof. M. G. Nanjundaaradya Memorial Rotary Mysore Midtown-Amaravani Award.[13]
Other honours attributed to her include the Triveni Award and the presidentship of the Davanagere Kannada Sahitya Sammelana in 2011.
