Phil Grenadier( born February 17, 1963, in San Francisco) is an American jazz trumpet player.
Early life
Grenadier's father was a trumpet player in World War II army bands and later in Europe but stopped playing professionally before his children were born. Grenadier began on trumpet when he was 8 years old. Grenadier's two brothers all played trumpet, but soon switched to guitar and bass. Grenadier's father helped introduce the brothers to their instruments, music theory and through his love of jazz, introduced them to classic swing era jazz.
At age 10 Grenadier began formal study of the trumpet with local trumpet teacher Larry Blake and studied technique and eventually jazz techniques for 6 years. Next Grenadier studied with jazz trumpet teacher and player John Coppola, who started Grenadier's professional playing career at 16 years old. Grenadier had a busy playing career playing in the San Francisco Bay Area performing with such notable artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, George Shearing, Carlos Santana, Sammy Davis Jr, Dionne Warwick, James Brown, Steve Smith & Vital Information, Tony Williams among others.He was just 17 when he was voted Best Jazz Soloist by both Down Beat magazine and the California Music Educators Association.
Career
Grenadier has been an assistant professor at Berklee College of music since 2016, teaching ensembles, trumpet, improvisation for brass and jazz brass history.
Grenadier released his latest recording, Regeneration, in 2022 on vinyl, which was recorded during the Covid pandemic period.
Currently Grenadier is living in Seoul, Korea further expanding his horizons.
