Payal Mehta (1979 or 1980 – 20 September 2026) was an Indian journalist and television reporter. She was known for her reporting on Indian national politics, public policy, and the Parliament of India.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Mehta was raised in Kolkata, where she completed her schooling and bachelor's degree in commerce. Then she moved to Mumbai to begin her professional career in media.
Career
[edit]Mehta started broadcast journalism in Mumbai in 2008 with Focus TV, initially worked as a sports reporter before shifted focus to national politics and parliamentary affairs.[2]
She was associated with several Indian news agencies and channels, including NewsX, Republic TV, Asian News International (ANI), and CNN-News18.
She is known for her reporting on Proceedings of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha,[3] Internal organization, campaigns, and strategies of major political parties, notably the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).[4]
Death
[edit]On 20 September 2026, while visiting Mumbai, Mehta suffered sudden medical distress during the early morning hours and was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.[1][2]
Many Public leaders expressed their condolences including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi.[4] State leaders, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, alongside members of the parliamentary press corps and media colleagues, expressed tributes.[5]
