Okada Shigeyoshi (岡田 重能; 1527 – May 17, 1583)[1] was a samurai and daimyō of the Sengoku period, who served as a retainer to the Oda clan.[2]

Biography

[edit]

The Okada clan claimed descent from the Yamada family of Owari Province.[1] Shigeyoshi initially served Oda Nobuhide against the Imagawa clan.[2] In 1542, at the age of 15, he distinguished himself at the First Battle of Azukizaka, becoming recognized as one of the Seven Spears of Azukizaka for his military bravery.[2]

He went on to serve Oda Nobunaga for many years.[2] Following Nobunaga's death in the Honnō-ji Incident in 1582, Shigeyoshi served Nobunaga's second son, Oda Nobukatsu.[2] Shortly thereafter, he was appointed warden of Hoshizaki Castle, but died the following year on May 17, 1583.[1]

In addition to his military achievements, he was remembered as a talented poet.[1] He was the father of Okada Shigetaka.[2]
