Napleton is a small rural hamlet on the southern side of Kempsey, about 3–4 miles south of Worcester. It is part of Kempsey and is in the WR5 postal district.
Historical records have it as "Appelton" in 1275 and 1327, which directly translates to apple settlement or orchard.[1]
Napleton Grange is a substantial period house on Napleton Lane which was once the home of Edward Elgar (composer) who lived in Kempsey from 1923–1927. Napleton Grange dates back to around 1440 and is a property on the ‘Elgar Route’ which takes people through notable places and houses linked to the composer. The Elgar was appointed Master of the King’s music in 1924, during his time in Napleton, and the Civic Fanfare was composed whilst he was living there.[2]
Napleton House is the main house of the hamlet and is believed to have been built on the site of a roman villa. It was once owned by the Marquess of Blandford.[3]
Napleton House also has a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the grounds [4] - Napleton Meadows.
