Nafis Halifin (born 2006) is a Malaysian independent researcher and LGBTQ+ rights activist. He is best known as the founding director of Pride In Research, a Malaysian-based organization focused on advancing knowledge, awareness, and understanding of the LGBTQ+ experience.[1] In 2025, Nafis was recognized as a Malaysian changemaker in the Wiki Impact 100 list for his non-profit advocacy and mental health work.[2]
Activism and research
[edit]While still a teenager, Nafis established Pride In Research to conduct independent academic research and provide support systems in Malaysia. His advocacy integrates mental health support, legal literacy, and academic research tailored to LGBTQ+ youth.[3] His research work focuses on the intersection of sociology and education, specifically examining how campus culture, policies, and staff attitudes shape the well-being of sexual and gender minorities.
Through Pride in Research, Nafis collaborates with licensed therapists to facilitate trauma-informed mental health support for students facing isolation.[4] In 2025, he partnered with the advocacy group Legal Dignity to co-launch "OutLoud Support," a workshop designed to provide queer students with emotional support and practical legal literacy regarding their rights.[5]
In June 2025, Nafis published a qualitative study titled "Between Silence and Structure: A qualitative analysis of LGBTQ+ student inclusion and institutional responses in Malaysian universities" in the World Journal of Advanced Research and Reviews.[6] Alongside this paper, he released a project flipbook titled How Malaysian Universities Erase LGBTQ+ Students.
Nafis has also collaborated with other national advocacy groups. In July 2025, he co-authored the campaign report "Building Bridges to Self-Acceptance" in partnership with PLUHO (People Like Us Hang Out!).[7] Later that year, he served as a reviewer for a joint KRYSS Network and Tiada.Guru report regarding inclusivity and policy reform in Malaysian public schools.[8]
