Muharrem Aslan (born 15 January 1977) is a Sydney-based singer, bağlama player, composer, arranger and music therapist from Türkiye. He has been described as a bağlama virtuoso by Australian radio outlets.[1] [2] His work combines Anatolian musical traditions with contemporary and cross-cultural approaches, including collaborations with Australian musicians and ensembles. [3] [4]
Early life and education
[edit]Aslan was born in Özcanlı, in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye. He grew up within the Alevi spiritual music tradition, in which songs accompanied by the bağlama are used to express spiritual and cultural ideas. He began singing traditional folk songs and playing the bağlama at the age of twelve.[2] [5] [6]
He migrated to Sydney, Australia, in 2001. In 2004, he composed "Gule Nisan", which became the title track of his first album. He later returned to Turkey, where he continued performing and recording, before returning to Sydney in 2015. [2] [6]
Aslan studied music at the University of New South Wales, graduating with Honours in 2021. As part of his honours work, he composed New Compositions for the Anatolian Baglama: Five Songs Without Words, a suite for solo bağlama. He subsequently undertook postgraduate studies in creative music therapy at Western Sydney University. [2][5] [6]
Musical career and style
[edit]Aslan's musical practice draws on Anatolian folk traditions while incorporating contemporary musical approaches. His work has been associated with the musical and poetic traditions of figures including Karacaoğlan, Pir Sultan Abdal and Sefil Kul Himmet. [3]
An important aspect of his work is the relationship between music and literature. He has composed musical settings of poetry by writers including Nâzım Hikmet, Hasan Hüseyin Korkmazgil, Sabahattin Ali, Orhan Veli Kanık, Yılmaz Odabaşı, Cemal Süreya and Özdemir Asaf. [3] [4]
Aslan has also collaborated with musicians from different musical traditions in Australia. His projects have brought the bağlama into musical settings involving jazz, classical guitar and other instrumentation, including collaborations associated with the University of New South Wales. [3]
His collaborative projects with Rose of April include Platonik Bir Aşk Masalı and Ali Göl Dağı Efsanesi, works combining music with narrative and storytelling. [3]
Fourtemolo

Aslan developed a bağlama performance technique known as fourtemolo. The technique modifies conventional tremolo through variations in the direction, intensity and combinations of right-hand plectrum strokes. [3] [1] [2] [6]
The technique is used to create layered rhythmic and tonal textures on the bağlama, combining rhythmic continuity with harmonic and vibration-based effects. [3]
Fourtemolo forms part of Aslan's approach to incorporating the bağlama into contemporary musical settings. [3] [1]
Buluşmalar (Nexus) Vol. 2
[edit]Aslan released Buluşmalar (Nexus) Vol. 2 in 2020. The project consists of thirteen compositions and collaborations between Aslan's bağlama and thirteen Australian musicians playing different instruments. [3] [1]
The instrumentation represented in the project includes electric guitar, cello, tenor saxophone, sitar, synthesizer, vibraphone and piano. Aslan composed and arranged the thirteen works, and the project also included a collaboration with the UNSW Classical Guitar Ensemble. [1]
One of the compositions, "Climate", was conceived around the theme of climate change. [1]
Turkuaz
[edit]Aslan later released Turkuaz, which received coverage on PBS FM's Global Village. The program described the album as combining Anatolian folk roots and poetic lyricism with modern orchestral elements. [5]
The album continued Aslan's engagement with Anatolian musical and literary traditions through contemporary arrangements. [5]
Music therapy
[edit]Alongside his work as a singer, composer and bağlama performer, Aslan works professionally as a music therapist. His musical career and therapeutic practice have developed alongside one another, with his formal studies including postgraduate training in creative music therapy. [3] [2] [6]
