Mooa Kang (born 1992), also recorded as Mooa Seongah Kang, is a South Korean multidisciplinary artist, painter, and exhibition designer.[1] She works between Seoul, South Korea, and Seattle, Washington.[2] Kang’s creative practice focuses on the relationship between nature, color palettes, and the human body, bridging fine art with functional objects and structural installations.[3] She is known for reinterpreting traditional Korean painting techniques and historical coloring systems into a contemporary abstract aesthetic.[4]

Early life and education

[edit]

Kang was born in South Korea in 1992. She attended Ewha Womans University in Seoul, where she received both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts specializing in Korean Painting.[5]

She later relocated to the United States to study interior architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), earning a Master of Design (MDes) in Exhibition and Narrative Environments in 2022.[6] Her master's thesis, Unfolding Embodied Experience: A Process-driven Immersive Exhibition Design Model, examined new ways to reframe the boundaries between artistic creation processes and final museum displays.[7] While at RISD, Kang also participated in the RISD x Hyundai Motor Group research collaborative program, contributing to biological design frameworks by engineering a recyclable urban structure inspired by the structural systems of silkworms.[8]

Career and themes

[edit]

Kang's work spans multi-layered wooden structures, functional art objects, textiles, and public installations. She employs traditional Korean Bunchae (mineral pigments) built up over thousands of layers on organic wood surfaces, combining fine art painting techniques with structural forms to blur the boundaries between individual mediums.[9]

Her aesthetic approach incorporates the chromatic principles of Dancheong—the traditional multi-colored decorative styling used on historical Korean wooden architecture—which she adapts into curvilinear abstractions of landscapes and physical figures.[10] This stylistic convergence of historical heritage and organic abstraction has been characterized by the artist as "Korean Art Nouveau".[11]

In addition to her independent gallery practice, Kang is the co-representative and visual art director of Dotavi, an interdisciplinary art group based in South Korea.[12] She also practices environmental design professionally within the commercial interior architecture team at the NBBJ headquarters in Seattle.[13]

The 'Body Table' series

[edit]

A core focus of Kang's functional art production is her Body Table series. The series treats human forms as dynamic, physical spaces where internal personal identity intersects with wider external sociocultural stereotypes.[14] The resulting structural works function simultaneously as utilitarian items, physical sculptures, and painted surfaces.[15]
