Milton Brucker (November 16, 1912 – June 24, 2007) was an American inventor and industrial entrepreneur. He founded and served as president of Zenith Plastics Company, a California-based manufacturer of reinforced-plastics components. Trade publications from the 1950s document Zenith Plastics' production of fiberglass parts for U.S. military aircraft and radar systems. Design histories also identify the company as one of several manufacturers involved in early production of molded fiberglass shell chairs for Herman Miller. In the 1960s, Brucker developed a fully enclosed offshore evacuation craft referred to in industry and regulatory sources as the "Brucker Survival Capsule."

Milton Brucker was born on November 16, 1912, in St. Paul, Minnesota. His professional career emerged during the rapid industrial growth of Southern California in the mid-20th century, particularly in advanced materials and manufacturing sectors.

Zenith Plastics Company

In 1944, Brucker founded Zenith Plastics Company in Gardena, California, and served as its president. The company operated during a period when reinforced plastics were transitioning from experimental wartime materials into broader industrial and aerospace use. Zenith Plastics specialized in fiberglass-reinforced components and became involved in manufacturing molded parts for military aircraft and radar systems during and after World War II.

Trade publications describe Zenith Plastics as producing components such as radomes and nose-cone structures for U.S. military aircraft, reflecting the growing reliance on composite materials in early jet-age aviation. Zenith Plastics placed repeated advertisements in Aviation Week throughout the 1950s promoting reinforced-plastics components for military aircraft and radar applications, demonstrating sustained participation in the aerospace supply chain.[1][2]

Eames molded fiberglass shell chair production

Zenith Plastics was among several manufacturers involved in the early commercial production of the Eames molded fiberglass shell chair for Herman Miller beginning in 1950. Design historians describe the chair as the first mass-produced plastic chair, developed by Charles and Ray Eames following earlier experiments with molded plywood and wartime materials research.[3]

Marta Gasparin's 2014 doctoral dissertation states that Brucker and two other Zenith Plastics engineers, Irv Green and Sol Fingerhut, presented their fiberglass process at the Eames studio.[4]

Early production relied on fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin shells manufactured using emerging composite molding techniques. During this initial period, shells were produced in a limited range of integral colors and base configurations, reflecting material constraints and the experimental nature of early large-scale fiberglass furniture manufacturing. Museum and design scholarship identifies Zenith Plastics’ Gardena facility as one of the sites contributing to this early phase of production, drawing on manufacturing experience developed through aerospace and industrial composites work.[5]

Ecco-Fonic

In 1961, Brucker acquired Ecco-Fonic, a Los Angeles company that manufactured tape-echo units. During his ownership, production moved to Santa Monica Boulevard, and plans were announced for additional models intended for churches, auditoriums, and radio stations. The company was sold again in 1962.[8]

Maritime safety work

During the 1960s, Brucker developed a fully enclosed, motor-propelled offshore evacuation craft intended for use on oil drilling platforms and fixed marine structures. The craft was designed to protect occupants during emergency evacuations involving fire, explosions, or severe sea conditions and came to be referred to in industry and regulatory sources as the "Brucker Survival Capsule."

U.S. Coast Guard publications and Federal Register notices from the late 1960s and early 1970s document the approval of the capsule for offshore use. A contemporaneous New York Times article described testing of a 14-foot enclosed spherical survival craft as a potential successor to open lifeboats, reflecting broader regulatory and industry shifts toward enclosed evacuation systems.[9] Regional newspaper coverage likewise identified the device by name in connection with offshore safety applications.[10]

A 1985 Los Angeles Times feature reported that Whittaker Survival Systems bought Brucker’s patent and built its first survival capsule in 1972.[11]

A March 1971 U.S. Coast Guard report described the evacuation of 27 men from a Shell Oil drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico after a gas blowout. The men used a Brucker Survival Capsule, and the report recorded no injuries.[12] [13]

Following Whittaker's commercialization of enclosed offshore evacuation systems, Survival Systems International later assumed responsibility for the manufacture and servicing of Whittaker and Brucker survival capsules as part of its offshore marine safety operations.[14]

Patents

Patent records identify multiple U.S. patents naming Brucker as an inventor. His early patents included a mold for heat-curing thermosetting resins, issued in 1951, and a method for molding reinforced plastic, issued in 1958 and assigned to Zenith Plastics.[15][16]

Later patents concerned wastewater processing, a copper barrier designed to prevent snails from reaching plants, a mechanism for repositioning automobile side-view mirrors, and a mechanical posture-monitoring belt.[17]

Death

Brucker died on June 24, 2007, in Los Angeles, California.
