Michael Israel Shevell is a Canadian pediatric neurologist and clinician-scientist whose research focuses on neurodevelopmental disabilities[1], neonatal neurology, and pediatric neuroethics.[2][3] He is a professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology & Neurosurgery at McGill University and physician[4] at the Montreal Children’s Hospital-McGill University Health Centre.[5] He is a former President of the Canadian Association of Child Neurology and a Councilor of the Child Neurology Society.[6] He is also a fellow of Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.[7]
Biography
[edit]He was born in Côte Saint-Luc, Quebec, Canada. He completed his secondary education at Wagar High School in Côte Saint-Luc, Quebec, graduating in 1975.[8] He earned a Diploma of College Studies (D.E.C.) from Marianopolis College in Health Sciences in 1977. He earned a Bachelor of Science from McGill University in 1980 before earning the degrees of Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery in 1984.[9]
Shevell joined the faculty of McGill University in 1991 as an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology & Neurosurgery. Concurrently, he was appointed to the attending staff of the Division of Pediatric Neurology at the Montreal Children's Hospital.[5]
Shevell became an associate professor in 1996 and a full professor in 2005 in the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University.[10]
He served as Director of the Division of Pediatric Neurology from 2008 to 2011 before being appointed Chair of McGill University's Department of Pediatrics and Pediatrician-in-Chief at the Montreal Children's Hospital in November 2011.[5]
Research
[edit]Shevell's research has focused on childhood neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly global developmental delay, intellectual developmental disorder, cerebral palsy, and neonatal neurological injury.[11] His work has incorporated clinical investigation, epidemiology, genetics, neuroimaging, and neurorehabilitation.[12]
He was lead author of a clinical practice parameter on the evaluation of children with global developmental delay, endorsed by the American Academy of Neurology, the Child Neurology Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.[13] He also led the Canadian Cerebral Palsy Registry[14] and served as project lead for the Cerebral Palsy Demonstration Project within NeuroDevNet.[15]
Shevell has also published on the history of neurology[16], including the practice of neurology during the Third Reich.[17]
