Macmillan Learning is a privately held digital learning company headquartered in New York City. It operates as the educational publishing business of the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, a German media company based in Stuttgart.[1] The company develops textbooks, digital courseware, and classroom engagement tools for higher education and high school courses.[2] Its products include Achieve[3], a digital learning platform, and iClicker[4], a classroom response system. A high school division, Bedford, Freeman, and Worth Publishers (BFW), produces materials for Advanced Placement and on-level courses.[5]
History
[edit]Formation of Macmillan Learning
[edit]The Macmillan name in American publishing dates to 1869, when George Edward Brett opened the first U.S. office of the British firm Macmillan & Co.[6] Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, which had acquired the British Macmillan in 1999, purchased American rights to the Macmillan name in 2001 and rebranded its existing U.S. operations under it in 2007.[7]
In 2011, the company established Macmillan New Ventures, which Higher Ed Dive reported was backed by a $100 million fund intended to add between 10 and 15 education-technology companies to Macmillan's portfolio.[8] By 2015, Publishers Weekly reported that the unit housed Hayden-McNeil, Sapling Learning, Skyfactor, Late Nite Labs[9] [10], PrepU, and DynamicBooks.[11]
In early 2015, Macmillan Science and Education announced that several of its businesses would be combined with Springer Science+Business Media to form Springer Nature. Macmillan Education's U.S. higher education business and Macmillan New Ventures were excluded from that transaction and remained under direct Holtzbrinck ownership.[12] [13] Later that year, Macmillan announced Macmillan Higher Education and Macmillan New Ventures would be combined to form Macmillan Learning, effective January 1, 2016.[14] [15]
Products and imprints
[edit]Macmillan Learning develops educational technology and publishes print and digital textbooks for high school and higher education in psychology, economics, composition, biology, chemistry, and other academic fields .[2]
Achieve
[edit]Macmillan Learning began developing Achieve, a digital courseware platform, in 2017. An initial version, Achieve Read & Practice, was released in 2018.[16] The company planned to launch the fill platform commercially in fall 2020.[16]
Before Achieve’s commercial launch, Inside Higher Ed reviewed Macmillan Learning reports about its beta testing. The publication noted that 8 percent of instructors testing it said it supported subject mastery more effectively than their previous approach. An education researcher interviewed by the publication said the findings would have been more credible if the research had been conducted by a third party, although the inclusion of modest results increased her confidence in the reports.[16]
In 2025, Inside Higher Ed reported on Macmillan Learning’s embedded AI tutor in Achieve, citing company-published data on student and instructor use.[17] The same year, NPR reported that Achieve’s AI tutor was designed to guide students through open-ended questions rather than provide direct answers.[18]
iClicker
[edit]Macmillan acquired iClicker in 2005. iClicker originated at the University of Illinois, where it was developed by physics faculty and researchers involved in introductory physics instruction.[19] In 2017, Inside Higher Ed reported that iClicker offered both physical response devices and a mobile application as colleges considered moving from dedicated clickers to smartphone-based systems. The publication identified cost, smartphone access, classroom Wi-Fi capacity, and the potential distraction of mobile phones as factors affecting institutional decisions.[20]
BFW High School Publishers
[edit]The company's high school division, Bedford, Freeman, and Worth Publishers (BFW), develops course materials for Advanced Placement and on-level high school courses.[5]
Imprints and Acquisitions
[edit]W.H. Freeman and Company was founded in 1946, and its first book was Linus Pauling’s General Chemistry, published in 1947 and remained in print for 31 years.[21] Bedford/St. Martin's was founded in 1981 by Charles Christensen and Joan Feinberg as Bedford Books, an imprint of St. Martin's Press. The imprint developed a focus on college writing and composition textbooks, including Diana Hacker's handbooks.[22][23] In 2012, the company acquired Sapling Learning, an online homework and assessment platform focused on science, economics, and other STEM disciplines.[24]
Leadership
[edit]In March 2022, Susan Winslow was named CEO of Macmillan Learning. Publishers Weekly reported that she was the first woman to lead the company. She had served as president beginning in September 2020 before her promotion to CEO.[25]
Copyright
[edit]Macmillan Learning has joined other educational publishers in legal actions concerning the unauthorized distribution of textbooks and related materials. In 2021, Macmillan Learning, Cengage, Elsevier, McGraw Hill, and Pearson obtained a preliminary injunction against 60 websites selling unlicensed copies of electronic books.[26] In 2023, Macmillan Learning, Cengage, McGraw Hill, and Pearson filed a federal lawsuit against Library Genesis, commonly known as LibGen. The publishers alleged that the online repository contained more than 20,000 files published by the four companies and sought damages or transfer of its domain names.[27]
