Lidice Megla (born December 6, 1968) is a Cuban-Canadian writer and literary translator.[1] She works between English and Spanish, focusing on poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.[1]
Biography
[edit]Megla was born in Cuba on December 6, 1968.[2] She emigrated to Canada in 1999 and resides in Nanaimo, British Columbia.[1] She works as an interpreter for refugees at the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society.[1]
Her Spanish-language publications have been acquired by the Vancouver Island Regional Library system[1] and the Vancouver Public Library.[3]
Career and affiliations
[edit]Megla translates literature across poetry, fiction, and art-related works.[1] She serves on the board of directors for the Literary Translators' Association of Canada (LTAC) as the Administrator at Large for the Western Region.[4] She is also a full member of the League of Canadian Poets,[5] and the Federation of British Columbia Writers.[6]
She has participated as a featured author at the Ibero-American Book Fair in Canada (Feria Iberoamericana del Libro en Canadá).[7][8] In addition, she is a contributor to the Expanded Spaces project published by Antares Publishing House, affiliated with York University's Glendon College.[9]
Her writing has appeared in literary magazines such as Sea & Cedar,[1] LaMásMédula,[10] and Insularis Magazine.[11]
Awards and nominations

- 2019: Winner of the "Hacer Arte con Palabras" International Poetry Contest.[1]
- 2024: Nominated for the Women of Influence Nanaimo (WIN) Award in the Arts and Culture category.[1]
- Selected for the Chelene Knight Mentorship program at Arc Poetry Magazine.[1]
- 2026: Her work "Geografías de la belleza" was recognized as one of the two best poems in the literary contest of the International Book Fair in Canada (FILibro Canadá).[12]
Critical reception
[edit]Megla's literary work has been the subject of critical analysis in literary magazines and dedicated publications. In 2022, Editorial Dos Islas published La que destapa los truenos, a monographic book-length essay by José Hugo Fernández dedicated entirely to the academic and literary analysis of Megla's poetry.[13]
Her short story collection Las pagodas de sal (2026) was reviewed by José Hugo Fernández in Insularis Magazine, where he analyzed its narrative structure and incorporation of historical figures.[14] Her poetry collection Espejo de Isla (2021) was reviewed by poet Abel Germán Díaz Castro.[15] Additionally, essayist Yaysis Ojeda Becerra reviewed her poetry in Revista Literaria Isliada, highlighting Megla's thematic focus on emigration and the female condition.[16]
