Leon Mitchell (born 8 February 1981) is a British author, filmmaker and researcher. His work has included directing for film and television, writing fiction and non-fiction, and conducting research in psychology.[1][2]

Early life and education

Mitchell was born on February 8, 1981 in Cambridgeshire, England. He attended Stanground Academy between the years of 1992 to 1997. From a young age he was active in music production, DJ mixing, cassette tape recording and the practice of breakdance performance. In 1995 at the age of 14, he recorded his first professional studio CD. The same year he filmed his first documentary about basketball on VHS Tape. [3] Music, comic books and film pop-culture of the 1980's and 1990's were influential in his early creative development. Between the years of 1996 to 2003, Mitchell spent his teen and early adult years as a professional artist and performed as a member of the British pop group Ice [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

Mitchell later served in the British Army Royal Army Medical Corps from 2003 to 2006 where he completed military basic training in Winchester and was later trained at Keogh Barracks as a Combat Medical Technician.[14] He was then stationed in Colchester with 16 Air Assault Brigade. In 2006 he left the British Army to continue with his creative work and studied for an Honours Degree at the Academy of Contempory Music in Guildford, Surrey. He later completed his post graduate study, completing a Masters Degree in psychology in 2024 at the University of Wolverhampton.[15][16]

Professional career

From 2008 to 2015 Mitchell worked in artist development, live events and music video production.[17] This included work with Leon Lopez who he managed. Kele Le Roc, Patrick Muldoon, Mesh29, Christian Bautista and A3.[18][19][20][21][22][23][24] He worked with breast cancer charity Walk the Walk with CEO and Founder Nina Barough from 2010 to 2015, managing the entertainment for their London Moonwalk, Moonwalk Scotland and Sunwalk events including , Aswad, Levi Roots and Andy Day [25][26][27] During his work within live performance and production he worked with Henley Festival securing artists including Burt Bacharach and Joss Stone[28]

Film and television

From 2013 to 2023 Mitchell moved into documentary and film directing. This included the comedy Zombies in Tha Hood (2014) with Louis Smith.[29][30]. The film received a production arts grant from Henley Festival.[31] The documentary Lambo (2017) this was distributed by The Orchard.[32] and Ellida (2019) an adaptation of the Henrik Ibsen play The Lady from the Sea. The production was filmed on location in Kragero, Norway.[33][34] Mitchell is the writer and director of the television science fiction series The Luna Squad (2020). The series ran for one season on Amazon Prime and included 7 episodes. It was later moved to Video on Demand Platforms. The majority of the series was filmed at Fort Amherst in Kent.[35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46]

Mitchell directed the science documentary Explorer (2021) and the documentary Secrets of the Forest (2023). Both were presented by Brooke Fleming, who played the lead character Ashley in The Luna Squad series.[47]

Mitchell later directed the 25th year reunion video titled Birthday for Irish girlband B*Witched [48]. Mitchell produced television series Best of the Best (2024) this ran for one series with 6 episodes. The series was distributed via Amazon Prime Video. [49]

Mitchell directed the documentary The One True Empress (2025) and wrote the companion novel, a historical works examining the life of Empress Matilda. This was discussed on BBC Radio Berkshire with historian and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society Sharon Bennett Connolly. [50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57] The novel was distributed by Gardners books.

Writing and literature

Mitchell's literature works includes writing fiction for children, young adults and biographical texts. His published works include the teen thriller Dark Dreamers (2024).[58][59] and book series Felicity Fire (2024 to 2026).[60][61][62][63][64][65][66]

Mitchell co-authored Stay, for Another Day (2025). The memoir of East 17 member John Hendy. The book title was inspired by the groups 1994 Christmas release Stay Another Day. [67][68][69][70][71]

In 2026 Mitchell wrote the independent biography Voice of the Earth - The Life and Legacy of Sir David Attenborough.[72] The book highlighted Amazon Rainforest Conservation [73].

Research and psychology

Mitchell's research focuses on the psychology of Imagination, The Default Mode Network (DMN) and Narrative Identity. In 2026 his work The Internal Cinema was published by The British Psychological Society.[74][75] His research has been discussed by the University of Wolverhampton.[76][77]

Mitchell is an advocate for children's mental health and young people learning to read and engage with more literature in their early years to support brain development. He was recognised for a Civic Award Nomination in 2024 by Mayor David Harmon for supporting the community with children's literature. [89][90][91][92] In 2023 He received the iLife Best in Business Award for Innovation[48] Mitchell is a member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA Connect) as a film director and writer. [93] In 2026 Mitchell was a finalist for creative industry recognition by the University of Wolverhampton Alumni Awards. [94] Mitchell's literature and storytelling has been inspired by authors Roald Dahl and Julia Donaldson.[48] Mitchell supports environmental concerns including rainforest consevation and the protection of Earth's natural habitats and wildlife.[73]
