Karkosa were an English indie rock band from Birmingham, England. Formed in 2014 by brothers Michael and Jack Warnock[1], the band developed a large following in South Korea and performed at the 2018 Zandari Festa in Seoul.[2] They returned to a sold out tour in South Korea in 2019.[3]

Karkosa and South Korea

In 2018 Karkosa obtained a large South Korean following 5,500 miles away from their hometown Birmingham, which was subsequently discussed in a published paper by Haekyung Um, “UK–Asia music business collaborations: Liverpool Sound City, Modern Sky and Zandari Festa”.[2]

In 2018 Haekyung Um reported that Karkosa’s social media posts quickly went viral and that Karkosa's Korean fanbase contributed to the band performing at Zandari Festa in Seoul.[2] Genie, the Korean music service also reported that the band had developed an unexpected viral following and that their first Korean headline performances sold out within minutes.[10] Following this, Karkosa signed with Seoul based independent record label, Beeline Records.[10]

Return to South Korea

Karkosa released singles through Beeline Records, Mango Tree in February 2019[6] and Aurora in May 2019[2]. Karkosa returned to Korea later in 2019 for headline concerts at Rolling Hall in Seoul and Club Cynic in Busan. Counteract reported that both Korean concerts quickly sold out.[3]

New Colossus Festival

In 2020 Karkosa performed at the New Colossus Festival in New York, USA.[11]

Disbandment

In August 2021 the band disbanded.[7]

Musical style

The Birmingham Press reporter Stephen Pennell described the band's music as "melodic pop-rock, epic in scale, going off on proggy tangents involving brass and synthesisers, with soaring choruses and dramatic swoops of tempo and volume.".[5]
