Jyoti Panka is an Indian educator from Arunachal Pradesh. She is a postgraduate teacher of political science and a recipient of the National Teachers' Award, which she received in 2024 while serving at PM SHRI Government Higher Secondary School, Longding.[1][2] Her educational work has included the community outreach programme Chale Gaon Ki Aur and the online learning initiative School Chale Hum.[3]
Early life and education
[edit]Panka was born in Wasathong village in Tirap district, Arunachal Pradesh. She studied at Wangcha Rajkumar Government College in Deomali and Rajiv Gandhi University, and obtained a Bachelor of Education degree from Hills College of Teacher Education in Naharlagun.[4]
Before entering the teaching profession, she worked as a newsreader with All India Radio, Itanagar, from 2009 to 2012 and was also associated with Doordarshan Kendra, Itanagar, as a host and drama artist.[4]
Teaching career
[edit]Panka began her teaching career in 2013 as a trained graduate teacher at a government school in Kalaktang, West Kameng district. She subsequently worked in Khonsa in Tirap district.[1]
In 2019, she passed the postgraduate teacher examination conducted by the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission and joined PM SHRI Government Higher Secondary School, Longding, as a postgraduate teacher of political science.[1][3]
While serving at the Longding school, Panka was selected for the National Teachers' Award in 2024.[1] She was one of 50 school teachers selected for the award that year.[2]
She later served as a postgraduate teacher of political science at Government Higher Secondary School, Deomali, in Tirap district.[4]
Educational initiatives
[edit]Panka initiated Chale Gaon Ki Aur, a community education programme in which senior secondary students taught children in remote villages during school vacations. The programme included student volunteers teaching in villages such as Niannu, Senua and Khasa.[3]
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she started a YouTube-based educational initiative called School Chale Hum to remain connected with students while regular classroom teaching was disrupted.[3]
She also initiated Ek Kadam Sundarta Ki Aur, a programme involving students in improving and beautifying their school surroundings.[3]
Awards and recognition
[edit]Panka received the State Teachers' Award from the Government of Arunachal Pradesh in 2023.[1]
In 2024, she was selected for the National Teachers' Award. National media listed her as the award recipient from Arunachal Pradesh.[2][5]
Panka has also received a state silver medal in Arunachal Pradesh for her work in education.[4]
