James W. Jansen (born July 27, 1945) is an American character actor known for his extensive, versatile body of work spanning film, television, and stage. He is best known to television audiences for playing the recurring role of Reverend Archie Skinner on the comedy-drama series Gilmore Girls and Dr. Heitz Werber on the science fiction phenomenon The X-Files and through the years was acclaimed for his abilitiy to seamlessly blend into diverse ensemble casts.[1][2]
Early Life, Education, Career, and Personal Life Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, Jansen, born James W. Jansen, attended Brigham Young University (BYU), where he earned his theatrical degree and actively participated in campus drama and theatrical productions.[3][4] Jansen's classical training at BYU laid the groundwork for his rigorous stage discipline.[5][6] A lifelong practicing member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jansen resides in Los Angeles, California, where he is a parishioner tied to the Los Angeles California Temple.[7][8] He never married and had no children to focus on his acting career while enjoying the freedom it brought him to independently fulfill himself within that profession and lifestyle.[9] As a busy character actor, he often portrayed authority figures, professionals, and recurring community fixtures.[10] He officially retired from acting following his return for the Gilmore Girls revival miniseries in 2016.
