Jewish Plot is a 2025 Off-Broadway play by Torrey Townsend, directed by Sarah Hughes. Produced by Lucas Katler Productions, the meta play follows Townsend as he reconstructs a scandalous Victorian melodrama by the fictional playwright I.W. Bruntmole, who recounted Jewish life in 1880's London. Using the fictional framing device, the playwright grapples with his personal history and contemporary Jewish American identity, satirizing the theatre industry's fixation on authenticity. The play premiered off-Broadway at Theatre 154 in October 2025. The production was selected by Vulture as one of the best plays of 2025.[1]

Synopsis

[edit]

Act I opens with an actor explaining the situation: many of the actors and the director have quit the play that the audience is there to see-- Jewish Plot by Torrey Townsend-- but the remaining actors are going to perform the show regardless. The actors transport the audience to 1889 London, where the fictional British playwright Irwin Willoughby Bruntmole wrote the original Jewish Plot. The fictional Jewish Plot follows a Jewish man, Baron Morris Von Azenberg, who pursues Sophia Fitzkernerton. Despite the Baron's best efforts, Fitzkernerton informs him that she is forbidden by her family from marrying a Jew. Jewish Plot continues to follow the Baron as he navigates anti-semitism in 19th century London, which includes a violent confrontation with a prejudiced French priest.

In Act II, the play shifts from Victorian melodrama to a live reading of the rest of the script, which Townsend apparently just finished from backstage. Townsend, forcing the actors to read his inner thoughts to the audience under the threat of suicide, inserts himself into the play to discuss the challenging realities of being a Jewish playwright. Ultimately, Townsend shares his complicated family lineage through the voice of a single performer, whose final monologue confronts the audience with Townsend's self-reckoning. The play ends in tragedy when the playwright, from backstage, is thought to have taken his own life.

Reception

[edit]

During its 2025 run, Jewish Plot received a wide range of critical responses, particularly with regard to the play's unconventional style. Jackson McHenry of Vulture selected Jewish Plot as #8 on his list of The Best Plays and Musicals of 2025, stating that "when [the show] connected it really connected, delivering an indelible final monologue that transfigured the theater into a wasteland."[3] Ruben Glazer of Staff Picks wrote that the play's meta-approach was done with a skill "so bracing and ingenious that I couldn’t help but laugh in a kind of joyful, excited understanding that I had seen something special."[4] Sean Pergola of Jewish Currents praised Townsend's ability to capture his internal spiral and anxiety as he attempts to understand his Jewish identity. Pergola wrote that Townsend "perhaps veers more toward shock value than thematic depth in his conclusion", but that Townsend is one of the few who can "depict this societal psychosis with appropriate gravity".[5]

Not all reviews were as favorable. Jonathan Mandell of New York Theater acknowledged the play's approach as "clever and bold", but ultimately found it "too diffuse and too self-conscious to be brilliant."[6] Tony Marinelli of Theater Beyond Broadway wrote that while "[S]ome spectators, unable to weather the storm, clomped indignantly out into the night," the play's intentional chaos was, for some, mesmerizing. Amid the play's chaos, Marinelli concluded that "Jewish Plotremains undeniably alive."[7]
