Jayanta Bose is an Hindustani classical musician, composer, and music educator.

Family

Bose was born to Biswanath Bose, a Benaras gharana tabla exponent, and the sitarist Bharati Bose.[1] He, along with his brothers Kumar Bose and Debojyoti Bose, belong to the fourth generation of the Bose musical family.[2] His daughter, Maahirii Bose, is a musician and a film director.[3]

Career

Classical music

Bose has performed at the North Kolkata music meet,[4] Girija Devi sur festival,[5] and Malhar music festival.[6] He has accompanied musicians such as Amjad Ali Khan on the tabla.[7] He and his brothers have performed together at stages such as Kala Mandir and Girish Mancha, as a musical trio known as Bosensation.[1][8] The trio also launched a scholarship for young musicians.[9]

International work

Bose has collaboratively performed with Nitin Sawhney at the Ocean music venue,[10] Royal Albert Hall,[11] Victoria and Albert museum,[12] and Montreux Jazz Festival in Miles Davis Hall.[13] He played tabla for the BBC and Open University adaptation of Aphra Ben's play The Rover, composed by Nitin Sawhney and directed by Jules Wright.[14][15] Bose has performed at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, giving a vocal rendition of his self-created raga Sohagranjani.[16]

Compositions and cinema

Bose has composed experimental works, such as ‘tabla symphony’[17] and a Bengali opera.[18] His unreleased compositions were sung by several singers in the archival music series Acharya Pariwar.[19] Singers such as Indrani Sen and Manomay Bhattacharya sang his compositions on his 60th Birthday felicitation concert, while Tanmoy Bose and Tejendra Narayan Majumdar rendered a jugalbandi based on a raga and tala created by Bose.[20] In cinema, his compositions include the song "The Boatman" for Mira Nair's film The Namesake.[21] He also scored the Bengali film Bhagshesh (2018).[22][23]

Bose has publicly stated that after a 12-year international music career, he has shifted his focus from touring and performing to teaching music. He established his own academy in 2002.[15]
