Hypixel SkyBlock

Hypixel SkyBlock is a game mode on Hypixel, a server for Minecraft: Java Edition run by Hypixel Inc. [1] It is Hypixel's version of Skyblock, a long-running community map in which the player survives on a small island floating in the sky. [2]
Each player starts on a private island, but much of the game takes place on shared public islands. [2] Hypixel released SkyBlock in its Prototype lobby on June 11, 2019, and the mode is still in active development, with its most recent major update, version 0.27, released on August 4, 2026. [2][3] Since February 2026, SkyBlock has required a recent version of Minecraft. [8]
Gameplay
[edit]SkyBlock has no win condition, so players set their own goals, such as collecting better gear, raising their skills or building up their island. [4] New players start on a private island with a basic minion, follow quests that teach the game, and then travel through a portal to a shared Hub island. [4]
Players level skills such as Mining, Farming and Combat by doing the matching activity, and higher skill levels permanently raise stats like health and defense. [4] Gathering an item also advances its collection, which unlocks new crafting recipes and rewards. [4] Minions are placeable helpers that keep gathering resources while the player is offline. [4] Players trade items through the Auction House and the Bazaar. [4]
Some islands are built around a single skill and open up as the player levels that skill. [4] Dungeons, added in 2020, are randomly generated labyrinths filled with monsters, mini-bosses and puzzle rooms. [4][5]
History
[edit]Skyblock had existed as a community-made Minecraft map for more than seven years, and Hypixel said it was one of the most requested games on its server. [2] Hypixel released its own version in the Prototype lobby on June 11, 2019. [2][1]
Version 0.8, released on July 7, 2020, added the first dungeon, the Catacombs. [5] Version 0.27, released on August 4, 2026, added two islands in a single update for the first time: Critter Safari and Torrhus Canyon, the second Foraging island in the Galatea region. [3]
Hypixel had long recommended Minecraft 1.8.9 or the latest release for playing on its server. [9] In January 2026, it announced that from February 24, SkyBlock would only accept the two most recent major versions of Minecraft. [6] Hypixel said the change would let it focus development on fewer versions and build content with newer blocks and mobs. [7] Version 0.24.2 put the requirement in place on February 24, 2026, along with a rebuilt Hub island. [8]
Reception
[edit]SkyBlock is one of the most popular games on Hypixel. [4] Its player-driven economy has also drawn academic interest. [10]
A 2026 study in the International Journal of Social Science Research and Review followed the daily in-game finances of six players during the time-limited Season of Jerry event. [10] It found that players who reinvested and relied on passive income generally earned more consistent profits than those who leaned on speculation. [10]
