Draft:Hitch Open

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hitch Open is an artificial intelligence competition series involving autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots. The series began in China in 2025 with the Hitch Open World AI Championships, a competition in which university teams developed autonomous-driving software.[1] In 2026, it added the Hitch Open Ping-Pong Embodied AI Challenge (HOPE AI Challenge), an autonomous humanoid-robot table-tennis competition included in the second World Humanoid Robot Games.[2]

The Intelligent Racing Foundation initiated the competitions. Rednet's coverage of the 2026 season launch identified Tang Minqin (Crystal Tang) and Allen Y. Yang as Hitch Open's co-founders.[3]

Autonomous-vehicle competition

[edit]

The 2025 championship began in April and used simulation-based qualifying rounds before progressing to tests with full-size vehicles. Seven university teams qualified for the road stage, and the teams used a common PIX Moving vehicle chassis so that the event principally compared their autonomous-driving systems.[4]

The final was held on 18 October 2025 on the 10.77-kilometre road through Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, which rises from approximately 200 to 1,300 metres in elevation and contains 99 bends.[4] Tsinghua University's Extreme Racing team won with a time of 16 minutes 10.838 seconds; Hunan University and Jilin University placed second and third, respectively.[4][5] Rain left standing water on the road during the final. Tsinghua did not make another run, and its fastest previously recorded time was used for the result.[4]

At the conclusion of the competition, the organizers announced that a dataset of driving in fog, tunnels, steep gradients and sharp curves would be made available without charge to companies and research institutions.[4]

Humanoid-robot table tennis

[edit]

The HOPE AI Challenge was initiated in 2026 and selected as a competition at the second World Humanoid Robot Games, held at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing from 22 to 26 August.[2][6] Reporting before the event described the Hitch Open table-tennis contest as testing visual perception, fine control and whole-body coordination.[6]

The matches were fully autonomous, with the robots making their own decisions rather than being controlled remotely.[7] Teams used the same AgiBot Expedition A3 humanoid platform, placing the competitive emphasis on perception, trajectory prediction, decision-making and whole-body control.[8]

On 25 August, the joint Peking University–Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence team defeated the University of Hong Kong SMASH team 2–0 in the final.[8][9] The joint Shanghai Jiao Tong University–Shanghai Innovation Institute team placed third.[10]

Public repositories

[edit]

As of August 2026, the Hitch Open GitHub organization listed six public repositories.[11] Four were original repositories: HOPE contains training, planning, simulation, deployment and rulebook material for humanoid-robot table tennis;[12] HitchPlay connects an Android speech interface and a locally running language model to compatible ROS 2 rover vehicles;[13] Hitch Sensor Dome combines a 3D-printable vehicle-roof sensor mount with ROS 2 recording, clock-synchronization, mapping and localization software;[14] and build_AWSIM_map converts ROS 2 sensor recordings into point-cloud and Lanelet2 maps for Autoware and track meshes for AWSIM.[15] As of August 2026, the Hitch Open GitHub organization listed six public repositories.[11]

The organization also hosted two forks. HamoLLM, forked from augcog/tai, contains edge language-model and retrieval-augmented generation software;[16] Hitch-Academy, forked from learnwithallen/ROAR-Academy, contains introductory course material on Python, NumPy, gradient descent and deep neural networks.[17]
