Herstelle (German pronunciation: [ˈheːɐ̯ˌʃtɛlə] ⓘ) is a village on the left bank of the Weser in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Etymology
[edit]Herstelle is first mentioned by name in 797 in various annals in several different forms, including (but not limited to) Heristelli, Haristalli, and Niwi Haristalli.[1][2] These forms are widely considered to be variants of the same name, reflecting differences in language, Latinisation, and manuscript transmission.
Niwi Haristalli consists of the elements niuwi ("new"), hari, ("army"), and stal ("resting place", "camp").[3]
History
[edit]Early Middle Ages
[edit]In the middle of November 797 Charlemagne entered Saxony with the intention to bring the Saxon Wars to an end. He established a camp by the river Weser and ordered for the camp to be named Heristelli. The choice of Heristelli as a winter encampment suggests that it held at least some logistical significance during the war. However, there are few recorded details about the settlement itself.
During Charlemagne's stay at Heristelli he celebrated both Christmas and Easter. During the easter celebration however, Nordalbingians abducted the Frankish royal envoys. Some of them were killed, while the rest was kept for ransom; of these, some escaped, while the rest was ransomed. Following this attack, Charlemagne traveled from Heristelli to Minden. From Minden he launched a military campaign to bring an end to Saxony.

[edit]Herstelle is located on the southern (left) bank of the river Weser, in the Weser Uplands. On the opposite bank lies the village of Würgassen and the Hannoversche Klippen.
To the east, the Diemel flows into the Weser in the town of Bad Karlshafen.[4]
