Guto Bussab is a Brazilian-born, Cape Town-based artist, photographer and filmmaker.[1][2] He founded MUTI, the parent company of the Cape Town film production company Muti Films, and was one of 38 curators for the 2014 World Design Capital programme.[3] His credits include co-producing the 2008 feature film Gangster's Paradise: Jerusalema[3][4] and directing the web series Gaze.[5]

Career

[edit]

MUTI and film work

[edit]

The World Design Organization described Bussab as the founder of MUTI, the parent company of Muti Films, Muti Photography and TheMutiGallery.[3] Muti Films produced Gangster's Paradise: Jerusalema (2008), directed by Ralph Ziman, with Bussab among the film's co-producers.[4][2] The Mail & Guardian described him as a Brazilian-born, South African-based multidisciplinary artist known for his producer work on the film and for his work in advertising as a director of photography.[2]

In 2017, Muti Films released Gaze, a web series set in the Cape Town art world, directed by Bussab and Jared Ethan Blake; Blake wrote the series and Shanna Freedman produced it.[5]

Writing in 2005, ART AFRICA described Bussab as a Brazilian filmmaker whose Johannesburg advertising-film offices contained the Muti Gallery space.[6] Getaway later described the Muti Gallery in Oranjezicht, Cape Town, as curated by Bussab.[7]

Visual art and exhibitions

[edit]

Bussab's solo exhibition Still ran at AGOG Gallery in Johannesburg from 6 October to 11 November 2016, presenting photographic narratives and video media; ArtThrob described the work as engaging with race relations, patriarchy, religion, gender politics and cultural appropriation.[1] The Smithsonian Institution's Warren M. Robbins Library holds a Guto Bussab folder in its Art & Artist files at the National Museum of African Art.[8]

Public art and design projects

[edit]

As a World Design Capital 2014 curator, Bussab was among the curators who helped identify and select public submissions for the Cape Town programme.[3] VISI listed The Secret Love Project as an official WDC2014 project with Bussab among its participating artists.[9][10] The Infecting the City Public Arts Festival 2013 programme listed Scrabbling under Bussab's name.[11]
